Luke: An Eyewitness Account August 17, 2016 Wednesday Bible Study

Luke 20:27-47 NKJV

Luke 20:27-33 NKJV 27 Then some of the Sadducees, who deny that there is a resurrection, came to Him and asked Him,

28 saying: “Teacher, Moses wrote to us that if a man’s brother dies, having a wife, and he dies without children, his brother should take his wife and raise up offspring for his brother.

29 Now there were seven brothers. And the first took a wife, and died without children. 30 And the second took her as wife, and he died childless.

31 Then the third took her, and in like manner the seven also; and they left no children, and died. 32 Last of all the woman died also.

33 Therefore, in the resurrection, whose wife does she become? For all seven had her as wife.”

In verse 27, Luke declares the identifying doctrine of the __________(1) that separated them from the rest of the Jewish religious elite. Sadducees

They did not believe in the ____________(2) of the dead. Jesus knew this of course and recognized their carefully worded problem as another attempt to trip Him up with words. resurrection

The scenario ____________(3) by the Sadducees is similar to questions detractors ask today. dreamed up

“What if a person becomes a Christian and continues to live like the devil?” is usually asked by someone wishing to attack the doctrine of grace.

Luke 20:34-40 NJKV 34 Jesus answered and said to them, “The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage.

35 But those who are counted worthy to attain that age, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage;

36 nor can they die anymore, for they are equal to the angels and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection.

37 But even Moses showed in the burning bush passage that the dead are raised, when he called the Lord ‘the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’

38 For He is not the God of the dead but of the living, for all live to Him.”

39 Then some of the scribes answered and said, “Teacher, You have spoken well.” 40 But after that they dared not question Him anymore.

Jesus cleverly answers their deceptive question with truth and even manages to get in a jab of His own.

The Sadducees need not worry about such a question since it is reserved for those who are “counted worthy to attain that age, and the resurrection from the dead.” (v35)

We learn from Christ’s answer _______(4) into life after this life has passed. There is ___(5) marriage in the next life. Marriage is for ___________(6) only. insight no this world

No one dies after the resurrection. Mankind is equal with the angels as concerning having _______(7) to God but are more privileged than their heavenly counterparts. access

__________(8) mankind actually has been adopted as God’s children. Angels will never be afforded that privilege. Jesus exposes a _____(9) in the Sadducees theology as well. Redeemed flaw

They claimed that scripture did not teach the resurrection of the dead. Jesus uses the familiar story of Moses and the ____________(10) as proof that it does. burning bush

Jesus declares “He is not the God of the dead but of the living for all live to Him.” (v38) Note that the Sadducees were silent.

Those responsible for ________(11) the scriptures remarked that Jesus had “spoken well.” copying

The scribes did not agree with the Sadducees’ view of the afterlife and appreciated Jesus’ _______(12) of this heresy. Neither scribes nor Sadducees would ever try and trap Him again. rebuke

Luke 20:41-44 NKJV 41 And He said to them, “How can they say that the Christ is the Son of David? 42 Now David himself said in the Book of Psalms:

‘The L ORD said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand, 43 Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.”’ 44 Therefore David calls Him ‘Lord’; how is He then his Son?”

It seems that some were willing to _______(13) Jesus the title “Son of David.” This would be a highly regarded title since David was a _____(14) for every Jew. assign hero

While Jesus was of the family of David, His bloodline was far greater than that of any earthly man. To _______(15) this title would not equate His true identity as the “Son of God.” accept

That has been a _____(16) of the enemy for over 2,000 years. The devil may even promote Jesus as a great man or prophet while ________(17) His deity. ploy denying

I John 4:2-3 NKJV 2 By this you know the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God,

3 and every spirit that does not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not of God. And this is the spirit of the Antichrist, which you have heard was coming, and is now already in the world.

Jesus quotes the very words of David to refute the logic of those who would deny His deity. David would never call his son his lord.

Luke 20:45-47 NKJV 45 Then, in the hearing of all the people, He said to His disciples,

46 “Beware of the scribes, who desire to go around in long robes, love greetings in the marketplaces, the best seats in the synagogues, and the best places at feasts,

47 who devour widows’ houses, and for a pretense make long prayers. These will receive greater condemnation.”

While a crowd gathered around Jesus and His learners, He spoke ______(18) enough so that even passersby would be sure to hear His words. loud

“Disciples” in verse 45 is not restricted to the ____(19). Jesus had many disciples. This would have been a large crowd of people. 12

Jesus is probably teaching in the courtyard of the Temple. This is the turf of the scribes. His words of rebuke would soon be __________(20) to them. reported

There may have been scribes nearby as Jesus spoke these words. One can imagine that He would point to one walking nearby as He spoke.

Certainly, this is how He began His teaching ministry in ________(21) as he pointed to flowers and nearby birds as He commented, “Consider the lilies, and consider the birds.” Galilee

While the scribes demanded _______(22) wherever they went, there would be a day they would have to answer for their _________(23). honor hypocrisy
