4 Student Progress and Achievement Rate (Percentage of first-time students with intent to complete who complete) GCC ranks 12 th of 39 colleges in the state-defined peer group, 23 rd out of 108 colleges in the state, and 3 rd out of 14 colleges in Region 7 (after PCC, 58.7%, and SMC, 56.6%). 56.3% 2007: 59.7% 53.4% 2007: 58.0% 50.3% 2007: 51.1% 45.6% 2007: 47.4%

18 Basic Skills Improvement Rate Why is GCC’s Basic Skills Improvement Rate so low? Only the lowest level Math courses (Math 155, 255, 190) are coded as non-degree applicable basic skills courses, and students taking these courses are less likely to succeed in degree-applicable Math courses than students starting at Elementary Algebra (Math 141, 145, 146, 245, 246).

19 ARCC 2008 Report: College Level Indicators Self-Assessment The purpose of the self assessment is to summarize the ARCC indicators for each college and show how the college is addressing any weaknesses. GCC’s self assessment in 2008 included the following: Description of GCC Diversity of population Success of transfers/degrees and certificates awarded GCC ranks high among peer groups, particularly students earning 30+ units Basic skills improvement lower than average
