1 Science Safety Rules 1)Listen quietly to all directions and procedures. Ask questions if you are unsure. 2)Follow the directions or procedures given to you. Ask your teacher BEFORE you try a “new” idea. 3)Never eat or drink in the lab or from the lab equipment. You never know what was put in there before you got it. 4)Accidents happen, but immediately report all accidents, no matter how minor, to the teacher. 5)Never point a test tube or open container toward yourself or anyone else. 6)Enter the room quietly and sit with your assigned group 7)Stay with your group. Avoid horseplay. 8)Wear goggles when you heat or mix anything. 9)Use the equipment with care so that students after you have the same opportunity to learn. 10)Dispose of all materials as instructed by the teacher. To avoid contamination, never return chemicals to their original containers. 11)No experiments that cause pain, discomfort, or harm to any vertebrate should be done in the classroom or at home. 12)Avoid inhaling fumes, use the wafting technique. 13)Do not throw paper or other solid material into the sink. 14)Keep hands away from face, eyes, and mouth during labs. 15)Consider all chemicals used in the science room to be dangerous. Do not touch or smell any chemicals unless specifically instructed to do so. 16)Never open storage cabinets or enter the lab storage room without permission from the teacher 17)Clean your lab area and all equipment before you leave, or immediately after a spill. 18)Do not remove chemicals, equipment, supplies, etc. from the science room without permission from the teacher 19)Wash your hands after every experiment. 20)Do not dare someone to break any of these rules. Consequences 1)If a student destroys lab equipment due to improper handling (not following directions, horseplay, etc.) they are responsible for replacement costs. 2)Referral to Principal’s office. 3)Not allowed to participate in the next lab (suspension from class). 4)No credit on the current lab or activity. Additional Consequences 1) You could injure yourself. 2)You could injure a classmate. I agree to follow these rules, as well as general rules of appropriate classroom behavior, so that I can ensure my own safety as well as my classmates’ safety.
