LAB RULES Protect your safety!

Rule #1 Conduct yourself in a responsible manner at all times in the laboratory. What that means: Failure to follow the lab safety rules will result in a phone call home and an automatic discipline referral.

Rule # 2 Follow all written and verbal instructions carefully. If you do not understand the directions, ask the teacher.

What is the main cause of accidents in the lab?

Not following directions!

Speaking of accidents, first aid for a burn: l Notify the teacher, and rinse with cool water. Hold the burned area under cool running water for at least five minutes, or until the pain subsides. If this is impractical, immerse the burn in cold water or cool it with cold compresses. Cooling the burn reduces swelling by conducting heat away from the skin. Don't put ice on the burn.

Rule # 3 Do not eat or drink in the lab.

Rule # 4 Horseplay, practical jokes and pranks are dangerous and prohibited.

Rule # 5 Be neat, clean up accidents immediately, and leave your lab area clean. not like this

Rule # 6 Be aware of safety equipment and how to use it.

Safety Equipment

Fire Extinguishers

PASS P ULL the pin

PASS A IM low

PASS S QUEEZE

PASS Sweep

What should you do first if your clothing catches on fire? l Hint: Remember what the fireman told you when he visited your class in elementary school.

Rule # 7 Follow the teacher’s instructions for disposing of chemicals at the end of the lab.

Rule # 8 Students are never permitted in the science storage rooms unless given specific permission by their instructor.

Rule # 9 Wear safety goggles when working with chemicals, glass, or heat.

Acid Damage

Base Damage

Flying Glass

It should go without saying, but… l Wear your eye goggles on your eyes, not your forehead!

Rule # 10 Pull back long hair and contain loose sleeves.

Rule # 11 Notify teacher of spills or accidents.

Rule # 12 l If a chemical should splash in your eyes or on your skin, immediately flush the area with lukewarm, gently flowing water for at least 20 minutes. If irritation persists, repeat flushing. DO NOT INTERRUPT FLUSHING.

Vocabulary word: Corrosive: a substance that will destroy or irreversibly damage another substance with which it comes into contact.

Acid burn

Rule # 13 Do not touch, taste, or smell any chemicals unless specifically instructed to do so. The proper technique for smelling chemical fumes will be demonstrated for you.

And now, l A word about wafting….

Rule # 14 Read the label of a reagent carefully before using.

Rule # 15 Do not return unused chemicals to the stock container.

Rule # 16 To dilute an acid, always pour acid into water!

Memory tip! Think of AAA: Always Add Acid

An obvious question: Why? A large amount of heat is released when strong acids are mixed with water. If you add water to acid, you form an extremely concentrated solution of acid initially. So much heat is released that the solution may boil very violently, splashing concentrated acid out of the container! If you add acid to water, the solution that forms is very dilute and the small amount of heat released is not enough to vaporize and spatter it.

Rule # 17 Do not use cracked glassware. (It’s more likely to break.)

Rule # 18 Do not leave a lit burner unattended.

Rule # 19 Point test tubes away from all people when heating.

Which student is correctly heating her test tube?

Rule # 20 l If I say “STOP” You Stop what you are doing – IMMEDIATELY!!!

Lab Safety It is everybody’s responsibility.
