EURISOL CB MEETING – PSI – 15 JUNE 2006 Sébastien Bousson IPN Orsay – Accelerator Division TASK 8 STATUS REPORT INFN – Legnaro IPN Orsay

Sébastien Bousson – EURISOL CB Meeting - PSI, 15 June 2006 - 2 - Solid state RF amplifier development @ Legnaro

Sébastien Bousson – EURISOL CB Meeting - PSI, 15 June 2006 - 3 - Solid state amplifier development 352 MHz, 5 kW Amplifier Further measurement sessions have been done in order to characterize it and find reliable working conditions. 2  10 kW prototypes The design is nearly complete and the construction has started

Sébastien Bousson – EURISOL CB Meeting - PSI, 15 June 2006 - 4 - At present only 2 types are fitting our requirements: Semelab’s D1029 and Polyfet’s LR301. Semelab’s type has been used for previous 2.5 kW and 5 kW prototypes. The maximum target power for continuous operation must be reduced to about 80% for a stable long working (while 100% can be reached for short periods). Polyfet LR301 type showed many failures during tests. A new version of D1029 (named DMD1029) has been produced by Semelab, with better characteristics expected (higher gain). This new module is undergoing tests at Legnaro.. Solid state amplifier development

Sébastien Bousson – EURISOL CB Meeting - PSI, 15 June 2006 - 9 - Half Wave Resonator development @ Legnaro

Sébastien Bousson – EURISOL CB Meeting - PSI, 15 June 2006 - 10 - low- vs. high-  : main differences “real-estate” length 232 vs. 276 mm top flange titanium vs st. steel welded vs. indium seal Tuning cup 70 vs. 90 mm Inner conductor flattened vs. cylindrical Holding bars distance 264 vs. 308 mm E a : 5 vs. 6 MV/m E p : 31 vs. 23 MV/m Half Wave Resonator development @ Legnaro

Sébastien Bousson – EURISOL CB Meeting - PSI, 15 June 2006 - 11 -  =0.17 –The construction was completed –First test at 4 K has just been performed @ Legnaro –Performances still under analysis, but very promising results were obtained.  =0.31 –A new test after HPR hopefully before summer Half Wave Resonator development @ Legnaro

Sébastien Bousson – EURISOL CB Meeting - PSI, 15 June 2006 - 12 - Cold tuning system for Half Wave Resonator HWR tuner design D. Zenere, INFN-LNL HWRs are rather stiff: fast tuning is probably not required (to be tested) The HWR tuner design is ismilar to the LNL QWR one Goals: 2 Hz resolution, 200 kHz range Status : Detailed study is now achieved Construction is ready to start

Sébastien Bousson – EURISOL CB Meeting - PSI, 15 June 2006 - 13 - Thickness = 1.25 mm  = 0.17  = 80 mm  = 0.31  = 100 mm NIOBIUM TUNING CUP The tuning plate is cooled by thermal conduction through the 1.25 mm thick Nb plate Tuning is obtained by plate deformation All forces are within the tuning cup structure: no deformation is expected elsewhere in the cavity Cold tuning system for Half Wave Resonator

Sébastien Bousson – EURISOL CB Meeting - PSI, 15 June 2006 - 14 - Lever Adjustable joint lever Holder Screw-nut system Screw-nut Driving shaft Fixed support Holder Cold tuning system for Half Wave Resonator

Sébastien Bousson – EURISOL CB Meeting - PSI, 15 June 2006 - 15 - The high beta HWR section is planned to be similar to the PIAVE linac The design of the cryostat is conceptually similar to the PIAVE one Main difference: the size of coupler lines The rf power lines will be designed after the EURISOL rf coupler Half Wave Resonator cryostat study @ Legnaro
