A look at the novel The Outsiders through the lyrics of Mad World

All around me are familiar faces Worn out places, worn out faces Bright and early for the daily races Going nowhere, going nowhere ALL AROUND ME ARE FAMILIAR FACES…

Ponyboy and his gang are best friends. They struggle togerher, protect one another, and fight together. Because of their friendship, they are familiar, and the struggles they go through are familiar as well.” HOW IT RELATES

Despite the fact that they are so close, their daily struggles with their environment and the socs cause them to have worn out faces and worn out dreams. Because they are greasers, they are going nowhere CONTINUED…

CHAPTER 8, Page 132 “What kind of world is it where all I have to be proud of is a reputation for being a hood, and greasy hair? I don’t want to be a hood, but even if I don’t steal things and mug people and get boozed up, I am marked for lousy.” Ponyboy Curtis QUOTE FROM BOOK:

Their tears are filling up their glasses, No expression, no expression Hide my head I want to drown my sorrow No tomorrow, no tomorrow THEIR TEARS ARE FILLING UP THEIR GLASSES…

There is an example of metaphor in this song. On slide 2, line 3, is an example of metaphor because it is comparing the Greasers and Socs lives to daily races of survival on the violent streets and at home with cold, unaffectionate parents. HOW IT RELATES:

An example of hyperbole is in slide 9, lines 3 and 4. He states that the dreams of him dying are the BEST out of all of his dreams. Even though we know that cannot be true, the exaggeration makes it a more powerful statement. CONTINUED

“And I find it kind of funny, I find it kind of sad The dreams in which I’m dying Are the best I’ve ever had “ AND I FIND IT KINDA FUNNY…

GREASERS PONYBOY: SOCS CHERRY: “Rat race is a perfect name for it. We’re always going and going, and never asking where. Did you ever hear of having more than you wanted?” (Chapter 3, page 38) RANDY: “ They spoiled him rotten. I mean, most parents would be proud of a kid like that – good lookin’ and smart and everything, but they gave in to him all the time.” (Chapter 7, page 116) QUOTES FROM BOOK:

This relates to Johnny because of his life. For example, his parents are alcoholics PLUS they physically abuse him as well. Because of this, Johnny often wishes he was dead. He feels he would be better off if he wasn’t alive. HOW IT RELATES:

However; when he is actually on his deathbed, he realizes how badly he wants to live because he wants to do so many things. He realizes how young he is to be dying, and he regrets the things he never was able to do or the places he was able to go. CONTINUED:

Chapter 8, Page 121-122 “You want to know something, Ponyboy? I’m scared stiff. I used to talk about killing myself… I don’t want to die now. It ain’t long enough. Sixteen years ain’t long enough. I wouldn’t mind it so much if there so much stuff I ain’t done yet and so many things I ain’t seen. It’s not fair.” QUOTE FROM BOOK:

GARY JULES: “When people run in circles it’s a very, very mad world. Enlarge your world” COMMENT: What this means is as long as people show no compassion towards others, there is no way they can fully LOVE. If the socs and greasers had just stopped to understand each other and see how each had the same struggles, all of this fighting could have ended and three people would still be alive. Instead, they chose to run in circles doing the same things to one another, therefore, NEVER being able to enlarge their world. FINAL COMMENT
