Verb Tense Consistency English 1002 Emi Yamada 26/01/2011

What is verb tense consistency…? Verb tense consistency is TO MAINTAIN THE SAME VERB TENSE, UNLESS THERE IS A SHIFT IN THE TIME FRAME

Guide line Usually, we shouldn't do shift verb tense unnecessary. There are two main general rules There are three main verb forms for showing time or tense: simple tense. Perfect tense. Progressive tense

Rule 1 Don’t shift from one tense to another if the time frame for each action or state is same. EX I have ice cream that contained 20% fat. I have ice cream that contains 20% fat.`

Rule 2 Do shift tense to indicate a change in time frame from one action or state to another. When relating current mental activity (present tense) about past events (past tense): EX I don’t remember when I met him, but I think it was about ten years ago. I don't remember when I met him, but I think it is about ten years ago.

Simple tense I eat lunch when I have time. I ate lunch when I have time. I ate lunch when I had time yesterday. I ate lunch when I have time yesterday. She will use the pen that I'll give her. She will use the pen that I give her.

Perfect tense (Past perfect) I loved her when she was skinny I loved her when she had been skinny (action happened before something happened in the past) (Present perfect) If I had done my exercises, I will have passed the test. If I had done my exercises, I would have passed the test. (The present perfect consists of a past tense verb with "has" or "have." It indicates action which began in the past but which continues into the present or the effect of which still continues.)

Perfect tense ● (Future perfect) ● I will arrive at school by the time it starts. ● I will have already arrived at school by the time it starts. ● (The future perfect tense indicates action that will have been completed at some time in the future.)

Progressive tense Present progressive I’m talking with Tom while our teacher is going out side. Past progressive I was taking notes when my professor was giving a lecture. Future progressive I will be sleeping when she will be hiking tomorrow at noon.

Review Do not switch from one tense to another unless the timing of an action demands that you do. ANALYZE TYPICAL WRITING IN YOUR FIELD to determine typical use and mixing of verb tenses— preferences can vary. For example, literary criticism is usually written in present tense, whereas the methods section of a lab report is in past tense.
