Holy Spirit Who He is. What is His Role? What Gifts Does He Bring and How is His Work Hindered?
Who He is The Holy Spirit is a part of the Holy Trinity with the Father and Son. Old Testament the Hebrew word (ruwach, pronounced roo'-akh) was used when talking about the Spirit.
This word literally means WIND, even the wind associated with a BREATH. In the New Testament the Greek word (pneuma, pronounced pnyoo'-mah) was used which means the BREATHE or a BREEZE! We can literally think of the Holy Spirit as the "Breathe of God!"
Like the Father Yahweh and the Son Yahshua Jesus The Holy Spirit is:
Omnipotent – All powerful. Luke 1:35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Spirit shall come upon you, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow you: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of you shall be called the Son of God.
Omnipresent – At all places at once. Psalms 139:7 Where shall I go from your Spirit? or where shall I flee from your presence? Omniscient – All knowing. 1 Corinthians 2:10 But God has revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searches all things, yea, the deep things of God.
Eternal - Hebrews 9:14 How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?
Equal - Acts 5:3-4 But Peter said, Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit, and to keep back part of the price of the land? While it remained, was it not your own? and after it was sold, was it not in your own power? why have you conceived this thing in your heart? you have not lied unto men, but unto God.
The Holy Spirit was part of all things, from the very beginning of scripture to the very end of scripture Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God (elohiym (pronounced el- o-heem') created the heaven and the earth.
Elohiym is the plural form of God. Therefore, as scripture was inspired and man began to write the Word, it was evident to the writers that God was made of more than 1 Person but at the same time there was one Godhead.
There are many scriptural references that show the coexistence of the the entities within the Trinity Elohim
Luke 3:22 And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased. Here we see the evidence of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit all mentioned within one verse. We also see the same reference elsewhere in the Gospels.
Matthew 3:16-17 Mark 1:10-13 Deuteronomy 6:4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD (Y@hovah (pronounced yeh-ho-vaw') our God (elohiym) is one LORD (Y@hovah)
It is important to understand the Holy Spirit is truly God because of the fact that if we are born again He lives in us. What we allow ourselves to be part of we are inviting God to be part of.. 1 Corinthians 6:19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
Four important principles to remember 1) The Holy Spirit is God, but He is a Person, not a force 2) We cannot focus on the Holy Spirit too much. Why? What is the Holy Spirit’s mission? To reveal Jesus. What is Jesus mission…to reveal the Father. What about the Father…to send Jesus and the Holy Spirit so we can come to Him.
. Perfect Harmony. They never had a crisis management meeting in Heaven. They never tried to sit down and work things out. They never had a power struggle amongst themselves. 3) The Holy Spirit gives gifts for use in ministry and empowers effective ministry
4) The Holy Spirit is a distinct Person within the Godhead, not a force, a thing, or an "it"
Proof of His Personhood 1) The Holy Spirit has intellect. 1 Corinthians 2:10 But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.
2) The Holy Spirit has knowledge. 1 Corinthians 2:11 even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. 3) The Holy Spirit has emotions. Ephesians 4:30 And grieve (lupeo (pronounced loo-peh'-o)); to make sad or sorrowful, heavy of heart) not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.
4) The Holy Spirit has his own will and he makes decisions. Acts 16:6 Now when they had gone throughout Phrygia (pronounced froog-ee'-ah) and the region of Galatia, and were forbidden of the Holy Ghost to preach the word in Asia, 5) The Holy Spirit Loves. Romans 15:30 Now I beseech you, brethren, for the Lord Jesus Christ's sake, and for the love of the Spirit, that ye strive together with me in your prayers to God for me;
Things God the Holy Spirit does as a person for us : 1) He teaches you things about God and yourself. John 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
2) He tells the truth and points us to Jesus. John 15:26 3) He guides. John 16:13 4) He convinces(convicts). John 16:8 5) He prays for you. Romans 8:26- 27 6) He commands (instructs). Acts 13:2
Other Facts About the Holy Spirit Genesis 1:2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. He worked in Creation
The Holy Spirit gave us the Word of God. 2 Peter 1:20-21 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost. He inspired the bible
The Holy Spirit regenerates our spirit when we accept Jesus Christ into our life. John 3:6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit- He brings the new birth 1 Corinthians 12:13 (NASB95) 13 For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit. He Baptizes us into Jesus
Baptism Unto Life Baptism Into The Body Of Christ Baptizer -- Holy Spirit Element -- Body of Christ Purpose -- Newness of Eternal Life Evidence -- Fruits of the Spirit For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ" (Galatians 3:26,27).
Love Joy Peace Longsuffering Kindness Goodness Faithfulness Gentleness Self Control
His involvement with Jesus: His Birth - Matthew 1:20 The life and ministry of Jesus - Luke 4:1 His death and offering Himself as the perfect sacrifice- Hebrews 9:14 The resurrection of Jesus - Romans 1:4
His Number One Function To Reveal Jesus and Glorify Him. John 16:13-14 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
What All Happened on the Day of Pentecost? Jesus said it was imperative that He go or the Spirit would not be sent Jesus felt it important enough for them to wait until the Spirit came to empower them
Prophecies of the Holy Spirit to Come John answered, saying, to all "I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I is coming, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire" (Luke 3:16).
OLD TESTAMENT PROPHECY CONCERNING BAPTISM IN THE HOLY SPIRIT: "For it is with stammering lips and another tongue he will speak to this people, to whom he said, "This is the rest with which you may cause the weary to rest," and "This is the refreshing"; yet they would not hear" (Isaiah 28:11-12). NEW TESTAMENT FULFILLMENT OF THIS PROPHECY: "In the law it is written: "With men of other tongues and other lips I will speak to this people; and yet, for all that, they will not hear me" (1 Corinthians 14:21).
OLD TESTAMENT PROPHECY CONCERNING BAPTISM IN THE HOLY SPIRIT:“ And is shall come to pass afterward that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions. And also on my menservants and on my maidservants I will pour out my Spirit in those days" (Joel 2:28- 29).
NEW TESTAMENT FULFILLMENT OF THIS PROPHECY: "But this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: "And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your young men shall see visions, your old men shall dream dreams. And on my menservants and on my maidservants I will pour out my Spirit in those days; and they shall prophesy" (Acts 2:16-18).
Jesus gave us the purpose for being baptized in the Holy Spirit. "But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to me in Jerusalem, and all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth" (Acts 1:8 The baptism of the Holy Spirit is not for the purpose of cleansing from sin, but for the purpose of empowering for service
What Jesus Said: And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, "which, He said, "you have heard from Me; for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now" (Acts 1:4,5
"Then the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance" (Acts 2:1-4)
Receiving the Holy Spirit upon conversion and being baptized in the Holy Spirit are two separate and distinct experiences. The disciples received the Holy Spirit on the day of Christ's resurrection for the New Testament experience of salvation. At this moment the disciples passed from Old Testament salvation to New Testament Salvation.
"So Jesus said to them again, "Peace to you! As the Father has sent me, I also send you." And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit" (John 20:21,22)
'And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, That I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your young men shall see visions, your old men shall dream dreams. And on My menservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days; and they shall prophesy" (Acts 2:14-18).
Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call" (Acts 2:38,39).
So after repenting and receiving Christ as Savior, you are eligible to receive the baptism in the Holy Spirit. Peter denied Christ three times before receiving the baptism in the Holy Spirit, but on the day of Pentecost he had power and boldness to preach to the multitudes and 3000 were born again
. Philip, one of the early deacons, went down to Samaria and had a city-wide revival. People were healed and demons were cast out. People received Christ as Savior and were baptized in water. More Evidence For Second Event
But when they believed Philip as he preached the things concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, both men and women were baptized. Then Simon himself also believed; and when he was baptized he continued with Philip, and was amazed, seeing the miracles and signs which were done. Now when the apostles who were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them,
who, when they had come down, prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit. For as yet He had fallen upon none of them. They had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then they laid hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.
Baptism in the Holy Spirit is an immersion in God the Spirit By Jesus, God the Son Baptism Unto Power Baptism In The Holy Spirit Baptizer -- Jesus Element -- Holy Spirit Purpose -- Power to Witness Evidence -- Gifts of the Holy Spirit
Word of Wisdom Word of Knowledge Faith Healings Working of Miracles Prophecy Discerning of Spirits Different Kinds of Tongues Interpretation of Tongues
EVIDENCE FOR SPEAKING IN TONGUES MARK 16:17 NKJ 17 "And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues 1 Corinthians 14:5, "I wish you all spoke with tongues... PAUL
1 CORINTHIANS 14:2 NKJ 2 For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries. 1 CORINTHIANS 14:18 NKJ 18 I thank my God I speak with tongues more than you all; JUDE 1:20 NKJ 20 But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit
ROMANS 8:26 NKJ 26 Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. 27 Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God
ACTS 10:46 NKJ 46 For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God... 1Co 14:39 Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues. 1Co 14:40 Let all things be done decently and in order.
1Co 14:39 My friends, be eager to prophesy and don't stop anyone from speaking languages that others don't know. 1Co 14:40 But do everything properly and in order.
BENEFITS OF THE BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT WITH A PRAYER LANGUAGE You speak to God. You are edified or charged up spiritually You are to pray – sing in your prayer language-1 Corinthians 14:14,15 Then what should I do? There are times when I should pray with my spirit, and times when I should pray with my mind. Sometimes I should sing with my spirit, and at other times I should sing with my mind.
When you put on the armor of God, you are instructed to pray in your prayer language. Eph 6:18 Pray in the Spirit in every situation. Use every kind of prayer and request there is. When you don't know how to pray properly about a situation, you can pray in the Spirit. Romans 8:26,27
THE BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IS A FREE GIFT RECEIVED BY FAITH (HEB 11:6 GAL 3:14) THE BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IS ADMINISTERED BY JESUS (LUKE 3:16) TO BORN AGAIN BELIEVERS (ACTS 2:38,39) AND IS RECEIVED BY ASKING (1RST JOHN 5:14,15 AND LUKE 11:9-13 ) GOD HAS ALREADY GIVEN AT PENTECOST NOW YOU CAN RECEIVE WHAT HAS ALREADY BEEN GIVEN.
Hindrances to the Baptism of The Holy Spirit: 1)Unbelief,doubt-UNBELIEF while not yielding one's self to the direction and leading of the Spirit The person who comes forward to receive the Holy Ghost, while harboring doubts in his heart, can go away unfilled. Personal reservations as to the validity of the experience will almost surely prevent the seeker from receiving this glorious experience. If one is not sure something is real or for them, they will never pursue and realize the end result!
The problem is doubt is removed when we embrace and believe God's WORD when it comes to our pursuit of the baptism in the Holy Ghost. Unbelief was Israel's problem in accepting the power that Christ performed His miracles was from God. Many times the Pharisees accused Christ of performing miracles by the power of Satan instead of the power by which He performed these miracles - the Holy Ghost.
That brings us to the next interfering factor that causes many not to receive the Baptism in the Spirit which is in many ways much harder to banish from the equation - the matter of yielding. Yielding is inextricably wound up with our all-too-human-need for individuality. We are taught from childhood to "stand on our own two feet," to "make our own way," and "not to be beholden to others." (Saints need each other. Interdependent not co.)
In the Kingdom of God we are to totally depend on God to help in every area. This means to partner with Him in living our lives. Unfortunately, this human tendency of self dependency (control) is so ingrained that we find it difficult, when confronted with the necessity of yielding our will to that of God, to give up our lifelong search for "independence." God doesn't want us independent of Him! He is the Loving Father of our souls who wants us to turn TO HIM with our every living need.
