2 The Summer Program- An Intro

3 “JHS is a non profit organization that provides community based programs and services to adults and youth in the fields of justice, prevention, employment and education throughout the Niagara Region.” Summer Jobs for Youth is provincially funded for 180 students in the Niagara Region Priority given to disengaged, underachieving youth with financial need- ESL? Many students behind in credit count Students must not have completed program in the past Provides Pre-Employment Training, matches students with job opportunities Provincial funding pays for student wages over the summer- may lead to long term employment (student is hired) JHS applications are due June 5 th - JH staff contacts students and sets up employment interviews/ secures employment based on student interest JHS- Summer Jobs for Youth

4 Seek Ministry approval through RPT- secure funding Speak to Board ESL Consultant in April to determine ESL populations within your Board (secondary schools) Target specific schools based on geographic proximity (for transportation budget) or target all schools equally Contact school administration Visit senior ESL classes to present program opportunity Students complete application(s)- Board, College, JHS Secure roster in June Selection Process/ Recruitment

5 Must be in Grade 11 or 12 Must have Level D English Proficiency Must be an Ontario resident (need SIN for Co-op) Must be able to use public transportation Must be able to attend all classes during summer as well as all Pre-Employment Training (mandatory) The Summer ESL Student

6 Number of seats available for Summer ESL are determined by the number of unused seats throughout the year Ex- 30 unused seats results in 30 Summer seats- 15 per board DCT teacher is funded for 110 hours- 55 hours per board at Continuing Ed rates Niagara College benchmark is paid by SCWI (includes text)- $870 Transportation is leftover from unused seats- Regional bus passes available for students, sometimes taxis for rural areas are made available Funding

7 Course Information: Niagara College, 135 Taylor Road, Niagara on the Lake, ON L0S 1J0 College Course: Understanding Professional English College Course Code: ENSD 1141 Ministry Course Code: EBD 4T (to be input by your Guidance Department) Course Description: In this course, you will develop the skills and strategies required for clear written communication in both academic studies and professional interactions. You will develop competence in three key areas essential for effective written communication in academic and workplace settings: conducting basic research, analyzing and synthesizing information, and employing process writing strategies. In addition to being enrolled in the course, you will receive a Niagara College Student ID Card, which will offer you all of the benefits a part time student at the College would have including access to: library, computer labs, recreation facilities, amenities, support services and general campus services. 11 Short turnaround (school ends June 26 th - program starts June 29 th ) Last week of school (during exams!) duties: Meet with each student Review application (all signatures/ SIN) Notify student of Pre-Employment training location (mandatory) Arrange transportation from all locations Meet students at Pre-Employment to take attendance/ solve issues/ provide support Attend College class daily- drop in/ Board contact Launching the Program
