3 “Harlem” Langston Hughes What happens to a dream deferred? Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun? Or fester like a sore— And then run? Does it stink like rotten meat? Or crust and sugar over— like a syrupy sweet? Maybe it just sags like a heavy load. Or does it explode?

4 HARLEM RENAISSANCE 1919-1929

5 Factors that influenced the HR after WWI include (add to notes) :  The Black migration from south to north  People were optimistic that things would change after the war  Awakening of a “black consciousness” in art

6  African history becomes a source of inspiration  Growing interest in African American history (slavery)

7 Harlem, NY became the cultural center for African-Americans Results of the HR include (add to notes): The Black experience shifted from rural to urban Harlem became very cosmopolitan- Blacks from all over the world interacted there

8 During the HR, African Americans worked to eliminate racial stereotypes through art, music, and literature:  Alain Locke encouraged everyone to become the “New Negro”  Writers wanted to prove that they could produce literature equal in quality to that of white writers

9 The legacy of the HR:  It encouraged the new appreciation of folk roots and culture  It provided a rich source for racial imagination and freed some African Americans from established conditions of the past

10  It allowed Blacks from around the world to find each other and share their experiences

11 The HR ended with the Depression and financial changes

12 Eatonville, FL - First all-black town in America - “The absence of whites not only kept Eatonville free of racism but also freed blacks to express themselves.”

13 A Sad Decline - She rejected the racial uplift focus of other HR writers - Black critics attacked her for not writing in the “ protest tradition ” - Richard Wright paradigm: masculine, urban, poor (race should be central)

14 Respond to the following questions in journal form. It should be at least half of a page. What do masks represent to you? In what situations do people mask their true feelings? Why do they do so? Describe a situation when you have had to mask your true feelings about something or were forced to behave as others wanted you to. How did it make you feel?
