1 General & Background InformationPractical & Useful DataDetailed, Original Research Encyclopedias Dictionaries Reference Texts Books Safety Information Handbooks Protocols Physical Property Data Syntheses & Reactions Spectra Journal Articles Patents Access Science Online version of the Encyclopedia of Science & Technology, this resource includes the latest scientific news, biograpies of scientists, and a center featuring study guides, essays, and bibliographies on various science topics Chemical Entities of Biological Interest (ChEBI) A freely available dictionary of molecular entities focused on ‘small’ chemical compounds Merck Index An encyclopedia of over 10,000 chemicals, drugs, and biologicals American Chemical Society Journals Produced by the ACS, this group of publications is a comprehensive collection of peer-reviewed journals in the chemical and related sciences. Over 34 full-text research journals are included. Royal Society of Chemistry Journals RSC (Royal Society of Chemistry) publishes many chemistry journals. IWU has full- text access to Chemical Communications, Chemical Society Reviews, Dalton Transactions, and Organic & Biomolecular Chemistry. PubChem Database created by NIH to provide information about small organic molecules. SciFinder This resource is the online version of Chemical Abstracts, which indexes chemical research reported in journal articles, patents, symposia, conference proceedings, dissertations, technical reports, and new books. Coverage goes back to 1907. Registration is required. Science Citation Index This database indexes leading science and technology journals as well as some symposia proceedings. It features cited reference searching, which allows users to discover who has cited a particular article or author. Coverage goes back to 1975. Aldrich Handbook Free site by the chemical/biological company Sigma-Aldrich, providing spectral data and other useful information for a wide range of compounds. ChemSpider ChemSpider extracts a wide range of information about chemicals and materials by crawling the Internet. The Spectra heading may contain a wide range of spectra: IR, HNMR, C13 NMR, UV-Vis, electron impact, and mass spectra. As an open source database, scientists throughout the world can upload additional spectra. The Data Sources heading provides a rich set of physical, biological, metabolic, toxicology, environmental data in addition to spectral and more safety data. The Properties heading provides basic property and safety information. ChemSpider can be searched by names, substructures, CAS registry numbers, and InChI identifiers. CRC Handbook of Chemistry & Physics This classic handbook contains hundreds of tables of critically evaluated data. The handbook is revised annually. Coverage includes analytical chemistry, astronomy, atomic and molecular physics, biochemistry, constants and units, electrochemistry, isotopes, fluid properties, geophysics, health and safety information, materials properties, nuclear and particle physics, polymer properties, and thermochemistry. IUPAC Compendium of Chemical Terminology Descriptions of terminology relating to chemical structure and nomenclature NIST Chemstry WebBook This database contains high quality, critially reviewed data compiled by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Up to 45 thermochemical, thermophysical, and ion energetics properties are available for over 40,000 compounds. Included is reaction thermochemistry data and a variety of spectra, when available. The database is predominantly organic with a few small inorganic compounds. General Chemistry - QD1-70 Analytical Chemistry - QD71-145 Inorganic Chemistry QD146-196 Organic Chemistry - QD241-449 Physical & Theoretical Chemistry - QD450-801 Biochemistry QD and QP Interdisciplinary Areas include Green Chemistry, Materials Science, Nanotechnology, and Polymer Science Merck Index An encyclopedia of over 10,000 chemicals, drugs, and biologicals These sources, and many others, are available on the Chemistry Research Guide, available through The Ames Library’s website or http://bit.ly/1RRTSUL Crystal Boyce, Sciences Librarian, cboyce@iwu.edu, 309-556-1551
