Greenways Primary School Year 6 Parents Information Evening 2015-2016

SATs week 2016 is week beginning: Monday 9 th May 2016

Changes to SATs As part of the National Curriculum review, levels have been abolished. From 2016, we will use scaled scores to report National Curriculum test outcomes. A scale of 100 will represent the ‘national standard’ for all schools. The scale will have a lower end point below 100 and an upper end point above 100. Scaled scores are used all over the world.

Scaled Scores The pupil’s raw score will be translated into a scaled score. This will mean that they are well placed to succeed in the next phase of their education. Reported to parents will be the pupil’s raw score, scaled score and whether or not they met the national standard.

Tests to be sat The children will be tested on: -Reading -Maths -Grammar, Spelling & Punctuation The Government are bringing back Science sampling so as a school we could be sampled but we will not know until the Summer term. Writing will continue to be teacher assessed against the year group expectations throughout the year.

Maths Format

Reading Content 1 paper 60 minutes long 50 available marks

Grammar Format

What we will do in Y6 All children will be working on the Year 6 age related expectations this year in the hope that they will gain the skills required to meet the national standards. This means that the majority of children will have Pathway 6 targets which can only be achieved through both learning in school and additional support from home.

What we will do in Y6- Autumn In the Autumn we will cover all of the key skills which the children need to become secure within all core subjects. Maths after school clubs will commence next week and will run throughout year 6 until SATs week. Reading interventions will start next week in the afternoons where children’s gaps in learning will be addressed.

Spring Term Maths after school clubs and reading interventions will continue. Maths & English lessons will continue as normal too so the children will still cover the national curriculum skills. During the week revision booster groups will begin for reading and maths during the day.

Summer Term Revision will remain the same but will continue into the afternoons too. SATs week there will be breakfast club where the Year 6 children will be invited to come in early, have breakfast and recap some key facts before the test at 9.15am. After SATs there will be a big focus on writing as this is a teacher assessed subject.

Parent Support In order to support you as parents with the new expectations we have provided free study books for Reading, English, SPaG, Science and Maths. These are loaned to you until after SATs week where they will then need to be returned in the same condition as you have had them today. Any damaged or lost books will need replacing at a cost of £4.50 per book.

Parent Support - Maths You have also been given a copy of the school calculation policy to help you when supporting your child at home. If your child does not know their times tables up to and including 12 x 12 they need to work on them at home. As there is a reasoning paper now we need to expose children to problem solving which can be done on an everyday basis at home, for example: baking, spending money, saving money, calculating area and perimeter etc.

Parent Support - Reading The minimum expectation is that children read 3 times a week and have it recorded in their reading diary which is checked weekly. It would also be useful for you to question your child on what they have read to develop their understanding of the text, which is what the reading paper in May will focus on. You have been given support questions to help you with this. Children need to read a range of genres from science fiction to classical texts and also non-fiction such as persuasion, instructions etc. Encouraging your child to read newspapers, leaflets and magazines will also help to develop their understanding of the different text types.

Parent Support - Spelling Within the new NC there is a year 5 & 6 spelling list which the Government expect all upper KS2 children to be able to spell and apply by the time they leave primary school. You have been given a copy of these words for your information.

Homework Homework in the Autumn term consists of two pieces - One maths and a piece of English, which may be a comprehension or writing task. In the Spring & Summer term an additional piece is sent home on a Monday to be in on the following Thursday and then this continues up until SATs week.
