World leaders made a promise that all children would have an education by 2015. 57 million children worldwide do not have the chance to go to school 1.7 million extra teachers are needed to give every child a good quality education 775 million adults cannot read and write

3. Who’s missing out on education? Most are girls Half live in areas affected by war and conflict Over a third have a disability

5. Back To School In Afghanistan The ‘Back to School Campaign’ Between 2002 and 2009 7 times more children enrolled in school Girls enrolment increased from 5,000 to 2.7 million However only 40% of students are girls

6. The numbers don’t tell the whole story 22% of the girls enrolled in school don’t attend As girls grow older many drop out of school Why?

7. 1. Distance to School Lack of schools in rural areas Distance from school greatly affects girls: –Female enrolment drops by 16% for every extra mile a girl must walk to school

8. Only 41.7% of schools had a building 65.1% had books 54.2% had desks 54.7% had chairs 28.6% had stationery 2. School Facilities

9. 3. Teachers There are too few woman teachers. 80% of women teachers work in towns and cities.

10. 4. Learning Quality There were no standardised school exams for many years. So how could children’s progress be measured?

11. 5. Poverty & Insecurity Poverty and insecurity are a big barrier to girls education in Afghanistan. How can girls complete school in this environment?

13. The Possible Solutions What will make a difference in Afghanistan? More girls’ schools and more women teachers, especially in rural areas. More funding for curriculum development, school facilities and equipment. More community involvement in managing schools (eg: School Governors, PTAs).
