 Wakeboarding Key concept questions By Christian Hejselbjerg Vagtborg

 Form: What is wakeboarding

What is wakeboarding?  Wake boarding is a sport that is on the water. So wake boarding is when you are on a board on the water and you hold a rope that will pull you because it is connected to a boat or a wire on a cable system or a wench. You can also go up ramps in wakeboarding. There are two ways how to wakeboard, behind a boat or on cable system

When was wakeboarding in invented and who invented it?  Wake boarding was invented in 1985. A San Diego surfer named Tony Finn started the develop of wakeboarding. It was a style of water ski and surfing it looked like a little surfboard it was controlled by a boat it the start. Source: wiki answers

 Function: How does wakeboarding work

How does it work?  Wake boarding works in 3 different ways behind a boat or cable system or a winch. In fact I think there is a forth way it is called kite surfing where the power of the wind pull the kite with then the kite of the wind will pull your wakeboard.  Behind a boat there is a rope attached to the boat. So when you sit in the water and hold on to the rope when the boat drives you will stand up and wakeboard. On a cable system there these things attached to the cable. And they go around and a around and when it is your turn, your cable you are holding will clip on two the thing connected to the wire and it will make you drive on the the water with your wakeboard.

What is cable skiing (cable system)  Cable system is a place where you water ski or wakeboard. You hold a rope which is controlled by an electric wire. The mechanism consists of two cables running parallel to one another with carriers between them every 80 meters. If you go double’s? it is possible on the they can normally be up to 3-4 riders attached to it each holding a cable at the same time ridding. The cable/electric wire is normally 26–30 feet/8-9 meters) above the water. This makes for a different feel than when riding behind a boat, whether wakeboarding or water skiing. Cable skiing was invented by the German engineer Bruno Rixen, who built the first water ski cableway on a lake in Bordesholm, Germany, in 1959; Germany has around 70 cables today. That’s say that Germany properly had the most wake parks/ cable skiing in the world!

 Causation: How did wake boarding start?

History of Wakeboarding/how did it start  The history of Wakeboarding goes back a number of years. With many different sports kind of in it.  For decades, surfing has been a favorite sport of beach lovers.  Surfers started out basic, with a rope attached to a boat and, sometimes even from the shoreline by a truck.  In 1985, a San Diego surfer named Tony Finn developed the Skurfer -- a hybrid of a water ski and a surfboard. It looked like a little surfboard, it started of only being pulled by a boat. But the riders style was more surfing kind.  This riding style is kind of connected to snowboarding and skateboarding with a bit of water skiing. The rider stood anywhere on the board because there where no straps or bindings. Still today people can be seen surfing behind a boat.Source: Wikipedia

Change: how has wake boarding changed over time?  Wakeboarding started out as a basic sport surfers wanted to try something new. They held a rope which was attached to a boat or sometimes a truck from the shoreline. A surfer invented something called a Skurfer (a small board with one binding). Now there are real wakeboards and cable systems there are also lots of different ramps.

 Reflection: what is the impact of wake boarding on the wake boarder?

Thoughts and reflections  Max: my friends and it looks fun to ride.  Khiri: My friends do it and when the pros do tricks it looks amazing but I suck at it.  Marcus: it is fun and It kind of similar to snow boarding and I feel like it.  Mathilda: The people there and the cold wind in my face.  Elisa don’t like wakeboarding: Not so good at wakeboarding It’s not fun if you can’t do any tricks.  Sanna: just don’t have time and can not do any tricks  Isaiah: fun and great.  My reflection: I think it is a great sport and I just love being on the water ridding doing tricks and going up ramps and I meet some of my friends there.

 Connection how is wakeboarding like surfing and skateboarding..

Connection to skateboarding and surfing  All extreme sports  Similar stance  In wakeboarding and skateboarding you use ramps  You can do tricks in all boarding sports  They all require a board and similar safety gear.  They are all solo sports  Surfers and skateboarders have their own style (the hats clothing music..)

 Perspective: Why does wakeboarding appeal to some people but not others? (Is it age?) or (male or female?) (or cost?)

What is wakeboarding to me?  Wakeboarding to me is a sport on the water. A different type of surfing and water skiing because you hold a rope and that rope is connected to the cable over you so when you hold the rope it will pull you. You can also go up ramps and stuff like that. Wakeboarding is also a place that I hang out see my friends and it is my passion so I LOVE it.

Some reasons why people can’t wake board or don’t like it?  So people are not able to wake board because it is a sport that cost money and not every one can afford it.  I think this is the average price for 2 hours: 700-1100 THB. If you are an adult the price is higher some places and to learn it it takes more than one time to learn it.  Some people may think it is too dangerous to try it, you need confidence, risk-taker.. Some people think it is a male sport. Some people are not allowed to wake board.  Some people don’t like wake boarding because you go in circles, when you start wakeboarding you fall and you swallow water.  It is not a free sport can’t some people prefer sports that are free.

Positive and negative impact of wake boarding Good: It’s a sport, it is very physical and it can make you be more of a risk-taker. It can keep you away from other stuff like video games, Bad: Wakeboarding can sometimes get you into smoking/drugs because they think they are cool because other people do it and they will start doing it more and more. It can be dangerous you can break a bone and get stitches…

Why do other people participate in boarding sports and why don’t they wake board ?  Some people think that skate boarding and surfing is free to do it, and wakeboarding cost money because it is not a free sport and they maybe don’t like walking back when you fall some skaters may not like swimming.

Steps I did  In the start I thought of what I could do for my exhibition then I heard arjan James say you should do something that is your passion.  Then I chose wakeboarding and I decided to teach the Burmese kids how to wakeboard, then I calculated the price of how much it would cost because wakeboarding is not free. Then I tries getting anthem to sponsor so I wrote a proposal. I also had my key concept questions going on there  Then Anthem would like to sponsor so I had half the price so I tried getting more sponsors so I made a newsletter that Aj Lisa sent out to all the homeroom teachers in the school so they would sent it out to the parents then lots of sponsors came.

 When we where in week three we all made a reflection on how it was going we wrote things and the bad things. I started doing an perspective movie on people’s perspective of wakeboarding After I interviewed Rebecca and Lior Sofer the pro rider and some other people. Then I kept on going with my key concept questions. A week later I wrote a email to Sister Sandar (Burmese teacher) so she could no about my exhibition with I teaching the Burmese kids and she could be there to translate. LAST WEEK: On the last week I had the meeting and we talked about how I should present and finish up the work.
