2 Obviously not Julie, so who am I? Teacher educator (PGCE) in Science and ICT since 1996 Research interests in new and emerging technologies in teaching and learning. Assistant Director of ESCalate, the UK national subject centre for teacher education and education studies Secretary – International Association of Mobile Learning

3 What did ESCalate do ? Supported teaching development with pedagogy and practice grants and research grants of £5,000 and £10,000 respectively. Examples include: Steve Rose – mobile devices supporting students learning John Twidle – internet in science ITE John McCullagh – video to support reflection on teaching Julie Hughes – electronic teaching portfolios Debbie Holley – Flip cameras with student teachers Aileen Mc Guigan – sharing practice with ICT in ITE

5 Recent commissioned work Working with diverse groups of learners in the digital age – http://escalate.ac.uk/digitalage Publication builds on 3 years of practitioner-focussed workshops. Case studies i.e. 'stories' from practice from HE teachers about their use of e-learning to support their diverse groups of learners. The practitioners (and their hybrid practices) who responded to the call are as diverse in their digital pedagogies as are their digital learners. The case studies offer lessons on trial and error and resilience and powerful examples of how teachers and learners were experiencing transformation through risk and experimentation.

6 Working with diverse groups of learners in the digital age Deployed to develop students’ skills, encourage collaborative and cooperative learning, supporting student transition, to track portfolio building and evidence generation, to develop professional learning opportunities and to support scenario-based learning. Previous work (Conole, Attewell) reports limited use of technology in HE/ITE - ESCalate has been capturing innovative work and showcasing by funding projects, workshops and the upcoming publication Virtual Learning Environments Podcasts E-portfolios Blogs Wikis Online simulations Other social media Web conferencing e-voting
