3 INTRODUCTION Meghalaya state Electricity Board (Me.S.E.B) was established during the year 1965. Presently, it boasts five hydel power stations at various places in the state :  Stage-1 situated at Sumer, Ri-Bhoi district of Meghalaya, which generates about 36MW.  Stage-2 situated at Umsumer which generates 18MW utilizing 2 machines each of 9MW.  Stage-3 situated at Kyrdemkulai which generates 60MW using 2 machines each of 30MW.  Stage-4 situated at NongKhyllem, East Khasi hills district of Meghalaya generates 60MW using 2 machines each of 30MW.  Umtru power station generates 11.2MW using 4 machines each having a capacity of 2.8MW. 9/2/20163

4 STAGE-I, POWER HOUSE, MEPGCL, SUMER This power station is the first generating plant of Me.E.C.L. The size of the building is 41.8mx21.3m including control room. Two penstocks are used and each penstock is divided into two units viz. unit-I, unit- II, unit-III and Unit-IV each of 9MW capacity. So it can generate a capacity of 36MW. 9/2/20164

5 SALIENT FEATURES OF UMIAM STAGE-1 Umiam Dam is the main source of water for the power house. A dam is built across the Umiam Lake with a catchment’s area of 85.5 squares miles with an average rainfall in the basin is about 105 inches (2667mm). The dam constructed has a maximum level of 3220 feet above sea level and a minimum level of 3155 feet above sea level. The head height is 145m. The Transformer Yard consists of 4 nos. of power transformer of 10600KVA. The transmission voltage is at 132KV. Supplier of hydro electric generator is M/s Toshiba of Japan. 9/2/20165

7 SWITCHGEAR EQUIPMENT IN A SUBSTATION TRANSFORMERS: The transformer used the generating station is a step-up transformer. Four 3-Phase transformers each of 11/132KV rating are used. There are two types of transformers: (i) Power transformer (ii) Protection/measurement transformer BATTERY BANK: Battery room which consists of 55 batteries each of 2V are kept. Battery charger(dc supply) is responsible for the control as well as protective relays. The D.C. supply from the battery is automatically used when all the system fails. 9/2/20167

10 132 KV GRID SUBSTATION MAWLAI, MEPTCL 9/2/201610 It involves how generated power is received and stepped-down from 132kv to 33kv, 33kv to 11kv, 11kv to 440v in this substation. The same stepped-down power is distributed to different feeders and these powers of different Feeders are maintained through control rooms and these powers are transmitted to different parts of the states. Simple line diagram of substation is shown.

12 SCADA CENTRE, MEPDCL SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) was commissioned on the 31st March 2009. There are 16 Substations that are connected to SCADA Control Centre (SCADA Building). Substation connected to SCADA using communication medium i.e. OFC. It is a software used to monitor,control and acquire data from field devices even from remote locations.. 14 CONCLUSION After undergoing the Summer Training, we have become aware of the workings of a transmission and distribution station, the operation of various machines and equipments and the significance of MeECL as a major player in supplying electrical power to the people of Meghalaya. 9/2/201614
