3  The Early Years... Adolf Hitler is Born - April 20, 1889 Hitler's Father Dies - January 3, 1903 Hitler Fails Art Exam - October 1907 Hitler's Mother Dies - December 21, 1907 Hitler is Homeless in Vienna - 1909-1913 Based on the descriptions of these dates, what conclusions can be made about Hitler’s early years?

4  WWI comes to an end. What feelings do you think are going through Hitler’s mind when he returns? Why?  Angry about the unfair punishments in the Treaty of Versailles  Struggling from four years of fierce combat  Hitler is jobless along with most German men returning home from war

9  A New Beginning- February 26, 1925  The Quiet Years- 1926-1929 Why do you think 1926-1929 was referred to as the Quiet Years?  Hitler was NOT receiving full support within Germany  He was still seen as too RADICAL by most German people “He is a lunatic who failed to take over Germany”

11  Hitler Runs for President-1932  Lost the election  The Republic Collapses- 1932  Hitler Named Chancellor of Germany- January 30, 1933  Hitler was appointed as Chancellor of Germany by President Hindenburg because of fear of Revolution.

12  February 27- Nazis burn Reichstag to create crisis atmosphere.  February 28- Emergency Powers granted to Hitler

13  German Parliament Passes Enabling Act  Becomes dictator – der Fuhrer (the leader)  Established the Third Reich (empire).
