2 What's a quilt?

3 A coverlet for a bed, made of two layers of fabric with a soft substance, such as wool or down, between them and stitched in patterns in order to prevent the filling from shifting

5 Quilt-making Throughout History The earliest known quilted garment is on the carved ivory figure of a pharaoh of the Egyptian First Dynasty about 3400 B.C. Crusaders brought quilting to Europe from the Middle East in the late 11 th century. Quilted garments were popular in the Middle Ages and knights even used them under armor to make it more comfortable. American made quilts flourished between 1825- 1875.

6 Quilt-making Throughout History 1825-1875 early settlers began moving west toward the Great Plains. Quilts were used for much more than covers. They were used as wall hangings, floor mats, and even currency. Many quilts during this time were pieced together from calico pieces of cloth from old clothing. They used the beautiful colors to make patterns into beautiful works of art.
