CO ² neutral (How to assess?) District is able to self-supply its energy demand (Renewable Energy) Only considering the use phase (e.g. building operation) or the whole life cycle of the district for the CO ² balance (material production, embodied carbon)?

3 © Copyright FASUDIR Project 2013 - All Rights Reserved SEVENTH FRAMEWORK PROGRAMME FP7-2013-NMP-ENV-EeB Collaborative Project Grant agreement no.: 609222 The key to achieve Climate Neutral Urban Districts About 40% of the overall energy consumption in Europe is related to the existing building stock and represents about 1/3 of Europe’s CO2 emissions The key to achieving climate neutral urban districts is improving the existing building stock Reducing the energy demand, improving the energy efficiency and increasing the use of renewable energy sources are the most promising key strategies towards climate neutrality Source:: www.spiegel.de; www.bild.de

Traditional approach to the building energy retrofitting brings poor results in relation to the urban sustainability, resource efficiency and economic return Use of Synergies and Interactions between buildings is the key for climate neutral urban districts (Renewable Heat Networks, Smart Grids) Isolated retrofitting measures on single buildings may even have negative impacts on the whole district Citizen participation in urban retrofitting projects has to be enhanced

The goal is to store the electricity surplus and to exploit it at the times of high electricity demand in the district Electricity storages are still very expensive The feed-in of the surplus electricty in the electricty grid may lead to a collaps of the electricity system and cause a black-out (overload) The Energy Supply Company will shut down all photovoltaic systems in the district in the noon time in order to avoid the black-out Source: http://whatgreenhome.com; http://channel.nationalgeographic.com

12 © Copyright FASUDIR Project 2013 - All Rights Reserved SEVENTH FRAMEWORK PROGRAMME FP7-2013-NMP-ENV-EeB Collaborative Project Grant agreement no.: 609222 Evaluating the Impacts of Energy Efficiency Retrofittings on the Sustainability of the whole District Avoid negative impacts of uncoordinated individual measures for the whole district Considering the whole life-cycle of retrofitting interventions Avoid social conflicts (Gentrification) Finding the most useful holistic trade-off between a variety of different strategies Complexity of decision making grows exponentially on district scale
