5. What are drugs?
A drug is any chemical substance that affects the physiological state of the body, such as how the central nervous system (CNS) works.
Drugs can be categorized according to whether they are legal or illegal, or by the type of effect they have on the body. For example:
stimulants – e.g. caffeine, cocaine
depressants – e.g. alcohol, solvents
painkillers – e.g. aspirin, heroin
hallucinogens – e.g. LSD
performance enhancers – e.g. anabolic steroids.

11. Effects on the body:
A small dose of heroin gives the user a feeling of warmth and well-being, bigger doses can make you sleepy and very relaxed.
It also slows down the way the body works and is a very strong pain-killer.
Heroin is highly addictive and people can quickly get hooked.
Overdoses can lead to coma and even death – as it can cause respiratory failure (this is what it’s called when your breathing stops).
Injecting heroin can do nasty damage to your veins and arteries

Cannabis is a depressant. It slows down the body’s reactions
Taking cannabis can make people feel chilled out, relaxed and happy, and they may get the giggles or become very talkative
It can make you hallucinate, meaning that you might see or hear things that are not really there
Using it has also been linked, in some people, to serious, long-term mental health problems
Now been reclassified back to Class B

It’s a powerful hallucinogen – this means that users are likely to see and hear things that aren’t there
LSD can also make you feel tired, anxious, panicky and depressed
There's no evidence to suggest LSD does any long-term damage to the body
BUT people have been known to harm themselves during a bad trip
