1 Heads up on Brain Injury Assessments Introduction Guy Soulsby, Chair, Brain Injury Social Work Group, and Social Worker, Brain Injury Rehabilitation Centre, Mossley Hill Hospital, Liverpool

2 There are about 100-150 per 100,000 disabled survivors of severe brain injury in the UK. At any one time there are thought to be about 75,000 disabled survivors of brain injury.

4 In Liverpool we have a team of social workers for people with LD and a range of specialist health and social care provision. There is only me specifically for brain injury – and in the neighbouring authorities no specialist social services - yet there will be significant numbers of people with severe problems in all areas as a result of brain injury. This means that social workers – and it tends to be those in teams for adults with physical disability – will be working with brain injury survivors.

5 It is useful to have some idea whether the person’s problems are related to a brain injury. The BINI, which you will hear about later this morning, gives some indication if the person you are assessing has problems related to a brain injury.
