Let’s see how it works  So, I looked up the popular "got milk?" ads that I see in magazines all the time. The one below is one with of my favorite X-Men…

ETHOS is "credibility...most professionals and leaders are assumed to be competent and trustworthy until they have acted otherwise." credible. “If this fabulous person drinks milk, then it must be a good thing for me."  Ethos is "credibility...most professionals and leaders are assumed to be competent and trustworthy until they have acted otherwise." Since Hugh Jackman is a celebrity, then it makes the advertisement credible. People think, “If this fabulous person drinks milk, then it must be a good thing for me." Right away, people are going to look at the ad and know think that it is something significant or reliable or trustworthy. Plus, everyone knows that Wolverine is sooooo cool.

PATHOS "the emotion of the message”. Certain BUZZ words that construct a very moving message."  Pathos could be found in different ways. The emotion in his face is very strong and confident, which kind of sets the mood for the ad. The first line of the text says ”My power to re-generate may be a secret, but my power to re-energize is simple.” we can explain pathos as "the emotion of the message”. Certain BUZZ words that construct a very moving message." Using certain words like Re-energize and Common Mutant Sense gives the ad a strong, SUPER HERO emotional feel.

LOGOS "The logical message. It appeals to facts, figures, and experts."  Logos is explained as "The logical message. It appeals to facts, figures, and experts.".” This statement gives the ad a sense of professional/expert advice. IT’S SCIENTIFIC.  The ad says that “Milk has protein which builds muscle.” This statement gives the ad a sense of professional/expert advice. IT’S SCIENTIFIC.

What goes in a ARUGMENTATIVE Essay  State your position – Pro or Con  Argument  Counter Claim  Follow the outline/rubric  Add in some ethos, pathos and logos

What do you need for your argument? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJ7u30OG7yk - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJ7u30OG7yk

Argument  MULTI-PARAGRAPH ESSAY! (minimum of 5…)  It’s what you write in it to CONVINCE, Persuade, and Argue that YOUR side is RIGHT.  Use QUOTES, FACTS, STATISTICS – anything that is EVIDENCE for your side of the argument. This is your LOGOS. Add in some emotional language and opinions and that’s your PATHOS. If you are credible – that’s your ETHOS.

Intro paragraph 1. Hook or Attention Grabber : a quote, fact, or question -- Must be related to your topic. (Try not to use a question) 2. Thesis statement: Simply and clearly state your position on the issue. (That’s BOB!!!) 3. PICK ONLY ONE SIDE TO ARGUE FOR THIS!!!!! 4. Explanation of the Thesis statement – without “giving it away” – clarify your point of view. (First date mentality) 5. Three arguments/reasons/ideas: Choose three arguments you can use to convince your reader of your position. Briefly state these arguments here. They may be just three words.

First two body paragraphs 1. List your first argument/ reason/idea 2. Explain it – give details about your point of view 3. Use a quote, statistic or fact 4. Explain #3 and how it relates to your argument. 5. Ask yourself “what do I mean by that?” and then write one more sentence. 6. Conclude your paragraph or transition to the next paragraph

The Counterclaim or Rebuttle  Don't avoid the opposing side of an argument. Instead, include the opposing side as a counterclaim. Find out what the other side is saying and respond to it within your own argument.  Including counterclaims allows you to find COMMON GROUND with more of your readers.  It also makes you look more credible (hello ethos!!) because you appear to be knowledgeable about the entirety of the debate rather than just being biased or uniformed.

conclusion 1. Summarize—restate your thesis statement and three arguments in different words 2. Make a closing statement. Tie your closing statement back to your opening hook. 3. (Hint: REWORD – like, actually use different words for your thesis, don’t just cut and paste) 4. Button (tie it all together) 5. We should see “Bob” throughout the essay

The Toulmin Method  Claim: The overall thesis the writer will argue for.  Data: Evidence gathered to support the claim.  Warrant (also referred to as a bridge): Explanation of why or how the data supports the claim, the underlying assumption that connects your data to your claim.  Backing (also referred to as the foundation): Additional logic or reasoning that may be necessary to support the warrant.  Counterclaim: A claim that negates or disagrees with the thesis/claim.  Rebuttal: Evidence that negates or disagrees with the counterclaim.

But wait…just as a reminder  Please Please Please pay attention to the upcoming slides.  And DO NOT WRITE THIS KIND OF CRAP IN YOUR ESSAY

Don’t write these phrases to begin your sentences  By the way,  That  Sure,  I personally believe…  I recall back 2 weeks ago,  Out there…  I have to agree…  Today’s Modern World…  Hello, my name is…  I am going to tell you…  I am going to write about…  I hope you liked my paper.  My point is…  I think/believe  Honestly  This quote means  The thing is…

Just promise to proofread  Check your there/their/they’re  Check your to/too/two  Check all of your homophones!!!!!  Capitalize your “I” and other proper nouns  Check your punctuation  And this goes for all the 5 paragraph essays.  Just one more thing…do all of these things…

OKAY, HERE IS YOUR PROMPT

 Any Questions?
