1 Yosemite National Park Questions By: Jack Wood

2 When did Yosemite become a National Park and why? In 1889, John Muir, America's most famous influential naturalist and conservationist, and Robert Underwood Johnson the editor of Century Magazine. They had on going concerns about the very bad effects of sheep grazing in the high country. They started a successful campaign to persuade Congress to set this area as a national park in 1890. On October 1, 1890, the U.S. Congress gave more than 1,500 square miles of reserved forest lands. This soon became known as Yosemite National Park.
