ENERGY

Definitions What is energy? Ability to do work What is Clean Energy? Is an energy supply whose utilization does not impair the environment and livelihoods but the magnitude differs, some are cleaner than others. What is Clean Energy? Is an energy supply whose utilization does not impair the environment and livelihoods but the magnitude differs, some are cleaner than others. What is renewable energy? What is renewable energy? Is the energy that comes from resources that are naturally replenished on a human timescale. Is the energy that comes from resources that are naturally replenished on a human timescale.Biomass,Solar,Hydro,Geothermal, wind wPOWER Hub - Wangari Maathai Institute

Some applications of energy Cooking Lighting Heating Farming wPOWER Hub - Wangari Maathai Institute

Why clean energy? Health: Around 14,000 people die annually in Kenya as a result of indoor air pollution (smoke) Climate change: Burning biomass as wood or charcoal releases green house gases such as carbon dioxide which causes global warming wPOWER Hub - Wangari Maathai Institute

Why renewable energy It can be replenished over the years Cost effective Minimal negative effects to the environment wPOWER Hub - Wangari Maathai Institute

Fire What is fire? What are the constituents of fire? – fire triangle What is fuel? wPOWER Hub - Wangari Maathai Institute

Fuels – cooking The main source is firewood This can be sourced sustainably from Forests Woodlots/On farm Agricultural wastes wPOWER Hub - Wangari Maathai Institute

Charcoal Production of charcoal(inefficient carbonization, cost) Use of charcoal with appropriate technologies Charcoal waste wPOWER Hub - Wangari Maathai Institute

Alternative fuels  Briquettes Made through compaction of biomass material in to a solid unit. The process can be manual or machine operated. A binder is added to make the biomass material stick to one unit. The binder can include starch, gum arabica, soil, animal dung, waste paper Bio mass material can be from rice husks, sugarcane bagasse, coconut husks, maize cobs, saw dust, charcoal dust etc. wPOWER Hub - Wangari Maathai Institute

Advantages Less emissions Easy to make Cheap High heating value wPOWER Hub - Wangari Maathai Institute

 Pellets Pellet fuels are fuels made from compressed organic matter, or, biomass wPOWER Hub - Wangari Maathai Institute

 Biogas This is a renewable energy source form waste that has decomposed. Materials used as organic matter include: Kitchen wastes, animal manure and slurry, agricultural residues, food and agro industries wastes, organic municipal wastes wPOWER Hub - Wangari Maathai Institute

Bio fuels – ethanol & bio diesel Energy derived from plant and animal materials. Examples of biofuels include; ethanol, biodiesel (vegetable oils and liquid animal fats) wPOWER Hub - Wangari Maathai Institute

Clean energy technologies Cookstoves Why have a Clean and modern cookstoves Saves more fuel Less toxic emissions Less cooking time & time to collect fuelwood Reduced greenhouse gas emissions More time for education and income generating activities wPOWER Hub - Wangari Maathai Institute

Traditional Stoves Improved Stoves and Fuels Advanced Super Clean Stoves and Fuels Technology shift wPOWER Hub - Wangari Maathai Institute

Lighting Sources of energy for lighting in domestic use Kerosene Electricity Candles Fire Solar wPOWER Hub - Wangari Maathai Institute

Use of kerosene for lighting Do you use kerosene for lighting? Health –indoor air pollution Cost Burns Not renewable wPOWER Hub - Wangari Maathai Institute

Solar lighting It is the Energy from the sun Can be used for cooking, lighting, running gadgets and electronics. Advantages Clean- no emissions Free - from a renewable source Cheaper Low maintenance cost wPOWER Hub - Wangari Maathai Institute
