Preliterate: “before” the written word Jomon: cord-impression pattern Hunter & Gatherer Society: paleolithic groups of people who depend on hunting and gathering for food. Usually nomadic. Agrarian Society: groups of people who depend on tilling the soil to plant and harvest food.

9 BUT, WAIT! Historically, clay vessels were not produced until people settled into agrarian ways of life! Since they were still hunters and gatherers, how did the Jomon potters have time to create such elaborate utilitarian forms?

Protected from invaders by four seas Warm currents along S & W shores create lush vegetation Cold currents along N & E shores create abundant fishing Peace + Abundance of Food = low struggle Low struggle to survive = time to artistically elaborate.
