2 Manhattan Project 1.In 1939, FDR was warned that the Nazis were attempting to build an atomic bomb. FDR wanted to create the weapon first. 2.He started the Manhattan Project.

3 Truman 1.In November 1944, FDR won his fourth presidential election. 2.But FDR died in April 1945. Vice President Harry S Truman became President.

4 Japan 1.The Japanese continued to fight even though they were going to lose the war. 2.The first atomic bomb was tested in New Mexico in July 1945. 3.Truman had to make a difficult decision.

5 Surrender 1.The Allies first issued the Potsdam Declaration warning Japan to surrender. But they refused. 2.Truman ordered the atomic bomb to be dropped on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, and again on Nagasaki on August 9. 3.Japan surrendered on August 15, 1945.
