1 IMPORTANT FEATURES OF YOUR CALCULATOR TI-30XII

2 LEARNING TARGET: THURSDAY, AUGUST 7  I can recognize and make use of important features of my scientific calculator.

3 TO TURN THE CALCULATOR OFF…  To turn off the calculator, use the “2 nd” button (light blue) and then hit the “On” button.

4 CLEAR AND DELETE KEYS  The “CLEAR” key will clear everything you have entered in your calculator (not the memory, but the whole problem you’re working on at the time).  The “DEL” button will delete the number or symbol where the cursor is at the time. In other words, it only deletes one number at a time instead of the whole expression.

5 TO CLEAR THE MEMORY…  To clear the memory on your calculator, you can: 1.Use the reset button on the back of your calculator. 2.Hit the “2 nd ” button, hit 0, arrow over to “Y”, hit “=.” 3.Hold “On” and press “clear.”

6 WHERE ARE PARENTHESIS?  Parenthesis ( and ) are located above the number 8 and the number 9.  Remember, if you open a set of parenthesis, you must close it. Otherwise you will get an error!

7 WHERE IS THE NEGATIVE SIGN?  The negative sign is located to the right of the decimal point on your calculator. The button looks like (-).

8 TO TYPE IN FRACTIONS AND MIXED NUMBERS…  Use the “A b/c” key. The “A b/c” key is located 3 buttons above the number 7.  To type in ¾, you would enter: 3 “A b/c” 4  To type in the mixed number 5 ½, you enter: 5 “A b/c” 1 “A b/c” 2  5 u ½ means 5 units (whole #’s) ½

9 TO CHANGE FRACTIONS TO DECIMALS…  To change fractions to decimals: 1.Type in what you’re given. (Example: ¾ would be 3 “Ab/c” 4) 2.Hit “2 nd ” “PRB” “=.” 3.The “PRB” button is located just above the “Ab/c” button.

10 TO CHANGE DECIMALS TO FRACTIONS…  To change decimals to fractions: 1.Type in the decimal as given. (Example 0.75) 2.Hit the “2 nd ” button followed by the “PRB” button. 3.Hit “=.” 4.This will give you the fraction form. (From the example, ¾)
