3 Types of Government Agencies 1. World Health Organization ( WHO ) –International Agency, sponsored by the United Nations –Compiles statistics and information on disease –Publishes health information –Investigates and deals with serious health problems throughout the world (ex. AIDS, swine flu, etc.)

4 Types of Government Agencies- cont. 2. United States Department of Health and Human Services (USDHHS) Human Services (USDHHS) –National agency –Deals with health problems in the US 3. National Institutes of Health (NIH) –Division of USDHHS –Involved in research on disease

5 Types of Government Agencies- cont. 4. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Prevention (CDC) –Division of USDHHS –Concerned with causes, spread and control of disease in populations 5. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) –Regulates food and drug products sold in the US to the public

6 Types of Government Agencies- cont. 6. Agency for Health Care Policy and Research (AHCPR) –Established in 1990 –Researches the quality of health care delivery –Identifies the standards of treatment that should be provided by health care facilities

7 Types of Government Agencies- cont. 7. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) –Establishes and enforces standards that protect workers from job-related injuries and illnesses

Health Department –Health services as directed by USDHHS –Specific services such as:  Immunizations for disease control  Inspections for environmental health and sanitation  Communicable disease control  Collect statistics and health records  Health education  Clinics for health care and prevention
