MYSA YOUTH ACADEMY U9/U10 Academy Program 2017/2018

What is this? A player development format that is used in our US Soccer Development Academy and state associations around the country Pools of players Flexible rosters Individual player development focus Appropriate training to match ratio Impactful matches Alternative to the traditional team/ league structure

Why create program? To emphasize individual player development at a critical stage of development. To develop large future pools of good-to-great players Provides professional coaching during a critical stage of development Continuous assessment of players over the 10-month period Provides structure neutral oversight, support and best practices for the program and club leadership To increase the probability of evenly matched opponents, making travel and matches more worthwhile.

MYSA Academy Key Elements Individual player development Pools of players Flexible roster Paired age groups (U9-U10 together) Appropirate training to match ratio

Who is Good Fit for Academy All players regardless of current ability A player who loves soccer, though may participate in other sports A family that understands and accepts a commitment to a 10-month training and competition calendar A family that understands and accepts a more individualized approach to player development This program is not an elitist program it is a program that is doing Competitive soccer in a different way from Traditional Competitive.

Comparisons ACADEMY PROGRAMCOMPETITIVE- TRADITIONAL STRUCTURE Year round curriculum taught by Professional coachesYear round curriculum taught mainly by parent volunteer coaches Measure success more by individual progressMeasure success largely by team results Players train with a pool/multiple coaches-club culturePlayers train with their team/coach- team culture Maximize learning & enjoyment for players, parents, coaches More pressure on players, parents, coaches Match-day rosters are flexible- more variableFoxed team rosters - players not move up as they progress

Competition Format A central purpose is to create more meaningful competitions through flexible match-day rosters to avoid blowouts that don’t serve player development. U10’s will play 7v7 It is recommended that each player play at least 70% of a match. Keeping score during a match is different from recording team scores. Each match is a competitive event but there is reduced pressure for team results that can stunt player development. The Academy encourages players to try new things, take risks, and learn to play “skillful” soccer, not merely “effective” soccer.

Pool Training Benefits Until all the players are being taught the same curriculum, by the same quality instructors, the gap of soccer knowledge will only widen. Pool is a bigger team with expanded social opportunities, valuable for making more friends and for the future when teams are larger Individuals can learn from and be challenged by a greater diversity of talents in a pool More player exposure to expert coaches Sense of club culture and belonging

Pool Rostering Benefits Clubs can move players to address individual development needs Flexible rosters can create more evenly matched competitions, making games more impactful and travel more worthwhile Allows for a continuous assessment for team formation rather than a one- time assessment prior to a season.
