2 What was it? Name given to the long series of conflicts between Athens and Sparta that lasted from 431 until 404 BC.

3 Peloponnesian War What caused it? Both Sparta and Athens were contending for power in and around the area. Sparta was alarmed at the empire Athens created through the Delian League. Conflict first broke out in what is known as the First Peloponnesian War. This was shorter and less widespread than the second. (460-446 BC)

8 Peloponnesian War So what happened? Sparta laid siege to many city-states and farmlands with their army. Athens used their navy to attack ships and transport soldiers. Pericles, the leader of Athens, refused to directly attack the Spartan army.
