10 Poetry Notes Fold the white paper in half, like a book Place it on the desk Fold the two sides into the center, you should have four sections. Your paper should form a W on the desk. Hold the center of the paper and cut 8 sections up to the side folds. Fold the purple paper in half, then cut it into two sections. Weave the purple paper trough the center of the white on each side of the center. It should look like a checkerboard. Place the paper back on the desk like a W and open the center, if you can open the paper you set the notes up correctly.

11 Poetry Notes Alliteration The repetition of the same or similar sounds at the beginning of words: She sells sea shells… Assonance The repetition or a pattern of similar sounds, especially vowel sounds: “Fleet feet sweep by sleeping geese” Consonance The repetition of similar consonant sounds, especially at the ends of words, as in lost and past or confess and dismiss Hyperbole deliberate exaggeration is used for emphasis. Examples of hyperbole: tons of money, waiting for ages, a flood of tears, etc.

12 Poetry Notes Metaphor two things are compared, usually by saying one thing is another, Example of a metaphor: All the world is a stage Onomatopoeia A figure of speech in which words are used to imitate sounds. Examples of onomatopoeic words are buzz, hiss, zing, and tick tock. Personification A figure of speech in which things or abstract ideas are given human attributes: dead leaves dance in the wind, blind justice. Refrain A line or group of lines that is repeated throughout a poem, usually after every stanza.

13 Poetry Notes Rhyme The occurrence of the same or similar sounds at the end of two or more words. Simile A figure of speech in which two things are compared using the word“like” or “as.” Stanza Two or more lines of poetry that together form one of the divisions of a poem. Verse A single metrical line of poetry, or poetry in general.

14 Poetry Notes Imagery The elements in a literary work used to evoke mental images, not only of the visual sense, but of sensation and emotion as well. Figurative Language The use of words, phrases, symbols, and ideas as a way to evoke mental images and sense impressions. Symbol An image transferred by something that stands for or represents something Repetition Sounds, syllables and words being repeated or happening again
