Module Overview Overview of Wireless Networks Configure a Wireless Network

What Is a Wireless Network? Advantages Extends or replaces wired infrastructure (wire-free) Increases productivity for mobile employees Provides access to internet in public places Disadvantages Possible interference Potential security risk Additional management A wireless network: Two modes: Interconnected devices connected by radio waves instead of wires or cables Ad hoc Infrastructure

Wireless Network Technologies Wireless Broadband: Provides high-speed wireless internet and data network access Comparable to wired broadband, such as ADSL or cable modem Used to have constant connectivity to internet and corporate network Windows 7 supports for Wireless Broadband: Driver-based model for mobile broadband devices Used the same user interface regardless of the provider Standard Maximum bit rate Range of frequenciesUsage 802.11a 54 MbpsC-Band ISM (5.725 to 5.875 GHz)Not widely used 802.11b 11 MbpsS-Band ISM (2.4 to 2.5 GHz)Widely used 802.11g 54 MbpsS-Band ISMGaining popularity 802.11n 600 MbpsC-Band and S-Band ISMGaining popularity, not yet finalized Windows 7 provides built-in support for all standards, but also depends on: The wireless network adapter The wireless network adapter driver

Security standard Authentication methods Encryption methods Remarks IEEE 802.11 Open system and shared key WEP Weak authentication and encryption. Use is highly discouraged IEEE 802.1X EAP authentication methods WEPStrong EAP methods provide strong authentication WPA-Enterprise 802.1XTKIP / AES Strong authentication (with strong EAP method) and strong (TKIP) or very strong (AES) encryption Used for medium and large organizations WPA-Personal PSKTKIP / AES Strong authentication (with strong PSK) and strong (TKIP) or very strong (AES) encryption Used for home networks or small offices WPA2-Enterprise 802.1XTKIP / AES Strong authentication (with strong EAP method) and strong (TKIP) or very strong (AES) encryption Used for medium and large organizations WPA2-Personal PSKTKIP / AES Strong authentication (with strong PSK) and strong (TKIP) or very strong (AES) encryption. Used for home networks or small offices Security Protocols for a Wireless Network

In this demonstration, you will see how to: Connect to a wireless network Connect to the administrative webpage of a wireless AP Configure the security settings of the wireless AP Configure an unlisted wireless network Connect to the administrative webpage of a wireless AP Configure the security settings of the wireless AP Configure an unlisted wireless network Demonstration: Connecting to a Wireless Network 10 min

Improving the Wireless Signal Strength To improve the signal strength: Ensure close proximity to the wireless AP Consider installing an external antenna Check for physical obstructions Add wireless APs Check for devices that may cause interference Consider changing the wireless channel

Review the diagnostic information 3 3 Identify the problem from the list of problems found 4 4 Resolve the problem that was identified 5 5 Diagnose the connection by using Windows Network Diagnostics tool 2 2 Accessed from:  Right click network icon on System Tray  Click Troubleshoot problems Accessed from:  Right click network icon on System Tray  Click Troubleshoot problems Attempt to connect to a wireless network 1 1 Accessed from:  Network and Sharing Center  System Tray Accessed from:  Network and Sharing Center  System Tray Attempt to connect to a wireless network 1 1 Diagnose the connection by using Windows Network Diagnostics tool 2 2 Review the diagnostic information 3 3 Identify the problem from the list of problems found 4 4 Resolve the problem that was identified 5 5 Process for Troubleshooting a Wireless Network Connection

Backup

Set up a Wireless Network Using the network cable that came with your wireless router, temporarily connect your computer to one of the wired network ports on your wireless router (any port that isn’t labeled Internet, WAN, or WLAN). Turn your computer on; it will automatically connect to your router.

Set up a Wireless Network Open Microsoft Internet Explorer and type in the address to configure your router. Address may be different for different type of Router. Check your router's instruction manual. Default address and password for some common routers

Set up a Wireless Network Enter password if prompted Internet Explorer will show your router's configuration page. Take the default settings, except:  SSID (Service Set ID) –Your wireless network name, be unique and not your name and address.  Enable Wi-Fi Protected Access 2 (WPA2) encryption to help prevent uninvited guests from connecting to your wireless. Enable WEP if WPA2 is not available  Set your administrative password to prevent others to configure your router

Set up a Wireless Network Depending on your router, the exact configuration page will be different. They’ll can set SSID, WPA2, and administrative password. Be sure you click Save Settings, Apply, or OK to save your changes.

Set up a Wireless Network

Select WPA2 as Authentication method PSK == Pre-Shared Key. Do NOT use in Enterprise environment

Set up a Wireless Network Create a Network Key (Can be a full sentence, up to 63 characters) - longer the better, the harder to guess the better

Set up a Wireless Network Disconnect the network cable from your computer— Your PC detects wireless signal Right-click the wireless network icon in the lower right corner of your screen, and then click View Available Wireless Networks.

Set up a Wireless Network The Wireless Network Connection window appears and displays your wireless network listed with the SSID you chose. If you don't see your network, click Refresh network list in the upper left corner. Click your network, and then click Connect in the lower right corner.

Set up a Wireless Network Type the encryption key that you wrote down earlier in both the Network key and Confirm network key boxes Click Connect.

Additional Security Considerations ONLY connect to infrastructure network Connect to Public Wifi On Demand Unchecked
