2 Background Level: P.5 Topic: Let’s Watch a Movie Text Type: Story Text book: School Based Curriculum (CECES Project School) No. of students involved: 34 pupils No. of teachers involved: 1 teacher

3 Background Time: Two weeks to teach the whole unit including the Main Text, Vocabulary, Target Structures, the Features of the Text Type and Writing Process 2 lessons for Class Writing 1 week to conduct the group writing online 2 lessons for Creating the Story by using Story Maker.

4 Task – general information Brief Description: The task is designed for the purpose of From Reading to Writing. After writing, students can present their final product in the story maker. They can also keep their own printed storybook. Objectives: Students are able to create their own story online and develop their creativity through making storybook with the story maker.

5 Task – general information Language focus: To use reflexive pronouns to emphasize that the object of a verb is the same person as the subject, and to emphasize who or what is referred to To use present prefect tense to relate past events to the present Design rationale: Students have grasped the skills of writing a story, but more interactive and interesting ways to conduct the writing task are preferred.

6 Task – Implementation Pre – Task (Teaching) Steps: Reading ~ Main Text Vocabulary Target Structures (Reflexive Pronouns, Present Perfect Tense) Features of the Text type (Story) Class Writing

7 Task – Implementation While – Task (Group Writing) Steps: An online writing platform for collaborative writing was introduced. Students formed in groups to discuss their story flow. Students are allowed to work collaboratively online without the limitation of time and space. Both teachers and students can give comments on the platform for improvement. http://pbworks.com

8 Task – Implementation Post – Task (Create a storybook) Steps: With the product of the group writing, students can create their own storybook using “My Story Maker” http://www.carnegielibrary.org/kids/st orymaker/http://www.carnegielibrary.org/kids/st orymaker/ Teacher prints out the story for pupils.

9 Reflection Impact on Students Students find the task interesting. Although they have a lot of experiences in conducting group writing, they do not have experiences to conduct the writing collaboratively online. They can also find out that there are different ways to publish their products. The task attains social purpose, writers would have real interaction with their audience. The task enables pupils to develop a sense of belonging, as they will get back a printed copy of the storybook.

10 Reflection Difficulties in the planning and implementing the task For the story maker, the animations can only be seen before publish, once it is published, the pictures can’t move, but it can still be printed as a storybook. As the characters, other pictures, movements and animations are confined by the website, sometimes it’s quite difficult to match pupils’ own story. On their other hand, it also enables pupils to use their creativity to fit their story into the story maker.

11 Reflection Tips/ Advise for Teachers There are a lot of tools / websites helping pupils to write better and increase pupils’ motivation in writing. Teachers can explore and create more interesting tasks for your pupils.
