2  Definition- basic machines.  Six types: 1. Levers- simple machines with an ar and a fulcrum. a. Three classes: 1. First Class- fulcrum is located in the middle. Ex. Claw hammer

3 2. Second Class- fulcrum is at one end and the input force is applied at the other end. Ex. Wheelbarrow 3. Third Class- Multiple distance instead of force. Ex. Elbow.

4 2. Pulleys- a modified lever that changes the direction of a force. a. Fulcrum center of the pulley. 3. Wheel and Axle- a lever connected to a shaft. a. Ex. Car steering wheel connected to the steering column.

5 4. Inclined Plane- helps to lessen the input force needed to lift an object. 5. Wedge- a modified inclined plane. a. Formed by two inclined planes back to back. b. Ex. Ax blade. c. Turns downward force into two forces directed to the sides.

6 6. Screws- inclined plane wrapped around a cylinder. a. Lessens the force needed. b. Ex. Jar lids  Compound Machines- a machine that combines two simple machines. 1. Ex. Scissors, car jack.
