1 Physics Section 5.4 Define “power” Power- is the rate at which work is done or energy is transformed. P = W ∆t P = power (watts) W = work (J) t = time (s) The unit of power is the watt. A watt is a joule per second. The “horsepower” is another unit of power. 1 hp = 746 watts.

2 Alternative formula for power P = F∙ v P = power F = force v = velocity Example: A 55 kg object is lifted 2.5 m in 3.0 s. Find the power output. Example: A rocket with a mass of 1,500 kg has a payload of 250 kg. What power output is needed for the rocket to maintain a speed of 75 m/s?
