1 A.L. IV.4.1: Real-Time Large-Scale Simulation and Visualisation Simulation Technologies are seen as fundamental for the efficient design and operation of the modern complex, heterogeneous and global ICT infrastructures Simulation Technologies are seen as fundamental for the efficient design and operation of the modern complex, heterogeneous and global ICT infrastructures AL IV.4.1: To develop Real-Time, Large Scale Simulation and Visualisation technologies, tools, applications and environments which will, in turn, support the development and deployment of the highly complex, information processing and communications (mobile and fixed) infrastructures. 2 A.L. IV.4.1: Real-Time Large-Scale Simulation and Visualisation WP 1999: Extension of ESPRIT IV WP 1999: Extension of ESPRIT IV Results: 15 Projects out of Calls 1&2 Results: 15 Projects out of Calls 1&2 The centre of gravity of most projects is a specific application rather than the development of new simulation tools. In most cases the Real-Time, Large-Scale dimension is missing or is very weak. There is a big diversity in the application areas and, notably, no application on the IT infrastructure has been proposed.

3 A.L. IV.4.1: Real-Time Large-Scale Simulation and Visualisation WP 2000: Focus closer to the T.O.R. for K.A. IV of IST Programme (Call 4 in June): WP 2000: Focus closer to the T.O.R. for K.A. IV of IST Programme (Call 4 in June): Open tools for RT-LS, distributed, interactive, multi-object simulation of complex and heterogeneous systems, (i) Special focus on applications from “Critical Infrastructures” area, (ii) Middleware development and architectures assuring interoperability of heterogeneous software and hardware systems, intelligent use of archival data, interfacing simulation models with real-time control systems.

5 A.L. IV.4.1: Real-Time Large-Scale Simulation and Visualisation  Real-Time Simulation (RTS) for optimal control over systems exhibiting non-deterministic behaviour and requiring a near-real-time Decision Making process. Control may be concerning Quality of Service management,, system critical functions, like safety and dependability (i.e. fault tolerance, survivability, reliability, security), agile networking, and rapid service prototyping. It may also be closely tied to the requirements for new, high performance computing architectures and structures, based on massive parallelism, Clustering, Evolutionary Computation or Web-based Computing.

6 A.L. IV.4.1: Real-Time Large-Scale Simulation and Visualisation  Large-Scale Simulation (LSS) addresses issues that would enable the analysis and the performance prediction of very large systems. Proposed LSS techniques should overcome the shortcomings of traditional simulation methods to handle the highly complex and ever growing IT infrastructure. Distributed simulation techniques such as federated approaches (HLA) as well as parallel as-fast-as possible simulations are priviledged candidates for LSS techniques but LSS techniques also include any software engineering solutions and algorithms that enable the execution of large-scale models on a computing architecture
