2. Europeans flood into America
Immigrants from Europe came to America for many reasons and entered the country through Ellis Island
Between , nearly 25 million Europeans immigrated to the United States.
The first wave came from Northern and Western Europe

Italy, Greece, Austria, Russia, Serbia

3. Why did they Immigrate Europeans immigrated to the US for many reasons
Many came because American industries had plenty of jobs available
Immigration led to very cheap labor in America
Some moved to avoid forced military service
Many Italians were escaping inflation in food prices
Jews in eastern Europe fled religious persecution

4. Nativism Resurges
Economic concerns and religious and ethnic prejudices led some Americans to push for laws restricting immigration
Nativism is an extreme dislike of immigrants by native born people
Nativist opposed immigration for many reasons
Many labor unions also opposed immigration

5. Prejudice Against Catholics
Increased feeling of nativism led to the foundation of anti-immigrant organizations
American Protective Association
Anti-Catholics
It’s members vowed to not hire Catholics
The Irish were among the immigrants who suffered most from the Anti-Catholic feelings

6. Restrictions on Asians
In the west, anti-Chinese sentiment sometimes led to racial violence.
In 1882, Congress passed the Chinese Exclusion Act.
Law barred Chinese immigration for 10 years and prevented the Chinese currently in the US citizenship.
