Content Broad Reading Comprehension Goal 2009 2010 2011 East Science MEAP Trend Data

1.Math: All students will understand the meaning of fractions and operations within fractions. 2.Reading : All students will increase their reading proficiency. 3.Writing: All students will increase their writing proficiency. School Improvement Goals

So what now…….. Instructional Focus: We will increase and monitor the use of direct and explicit vocabulary instruction within our classrooms. (Strategic Plan – Strategy #3)

Why did we choose this focus? *Waverly East free and reduced percentage – 65% “Children of poverty come to school with significantly fewer academic background experiences than other children………schools that are highly effective produce results that almost entirely overcome the effects of student backgrounds.” (Dr. Marzano)

 Children of middle class have heard 48,000 words before coming to school.  Children of poverty have heard only 13,000 words before coming to school.  Academic background knowledge affects school learning, occupation, and status in life.  Vocabulary knowledge is one of the best predictors of overall intelligence (.80 correlation). (Marzano, et. al 2011)

Proactive Plan: Implementation of the Reading Street program Intentional use of graphic organizers and word walls in all instructional areas Waverly East Staff will review “vocabulary strategies” each month. Waverly East staff will follow Marzano’s “Six Steps to Teaching Vocabulary” guidelines.

Outcomes of Vocabulary Instruction

Marzano’s 6 Steps of Teaching Vocabulary: 1.Teacher provides a student-friendly definition 2.Students restate the definition in their own words 3.Students are asked to construct a picture, symbol or graphic representing the word 4.Students are engaged in activities that help add to their knowledge of this vocabulary 5.Students are asked to periodically discuss the terms they are learning 6.Students are periodically involved in word play games

Goals/Results:  To raise academic achievement on building content area assessments.  To raise reading and math MEAP scores 5% by the fall of 2013

“The limits of your language are the limits of your world. All I know is what I have words for.” Ludwig Wittgenstein
