27 Character: In this photo, a young girl is looking through a balcony at the dream that she cannot reach. She is trapped in a prison-like world where she can’t do anything she wants. Even though viewers are unable to see the girl’s face, based on her posture, standing straight with her head tilt back, she is fascinated and interested about exploring the outside’s unknown. Looking outside, she wishes to escape reality and wants to be set free from the barrier that surrounds her to make decisions that will truly fit herself. The shape of the entrance to the balcony is a woman, which portrays the future that is set up by others for the girl. Furthermore, the little girl holds on to the teddy bear by the ear portrays that some innocence is still left in her. Color: The colors in this picture varies from a dark blue to a bright red, which illustrates the little girl’s feelings. The main focus of this picture is the girl because of her vibrant red dress emphasizing how full of energy and curious the girl is in exploring the world with no weight pulling her down. However, the gloomy clouds overpowers the small amount of bright clouds on the right, which is the girl’s failure in trying to overpower people’s expectations of her. The really dark clouds on the top of the wall is the piling expectation on the girl which deepens her sadness. The dark railing symbolizes the restriction that is keeping the girl from the freedom of developing her own personality and finding who she is. Everything outside is all bright depicting a dreamy-like world, which is the happy thing that keeps the girl going, but the bird’s dark color shows that there will be obstacles when they is no restrictions keeping people in check. Light: All around the woman is filled with darkness unlike the girl and outside. The sun, which isn’t in the picture, is the source of light that’s shining on the young girl keeping her from not giving up, hence the small patch of bright clouds on the wall. Even though she doesn’t give up, the expectations overwhelm her, the darkness on the top, and slowly controls her life, the darkness around the sides slowly engulfing the rest of the wall. Everything in the room and on the wall is left in darkness illustrating the depressing childhood she has had caused by the expectation that people made for her. The girl’s shadow, which is darker than the railing’s shadow, is the sadness that she hopes to leave behind and remove from her memories. Angle: The painter positioned this picture from the girl’s back to let the viewers be able to visualize and feel what it is like to be with the girl. Allowing us to see how dark and gloomy the room is compared to the outside and what the girl is looking at. Because of this, viewers aren’t able to see the girl’s face which makes us judge her posture instead to understand how she is feeling. However, from this angle, viewers can tell that the entrance to the balcony is in the shape of a woman and that the sun is hidden. Proportion: The woman is dominating everything in the picture, this represents the big expectations people have for the way she grows up, leaving no space for her to explore herself and speak up. The railing that is blocking the girl from freedom to grow is big next to the little girl but is small to the woman, displaying that the same obstacles can have different effect on people. Placement: The girl’s face isn’t shown because she is looking for freedom and to be able to escape from the expectations piled upon the girl. Outside, the birds are a symbol of freedom which the girl looks at, but the railing in front of the girl blocks her from finding her personalities and what makes her her. The source of light isn’t shown because not everything is revealed about the world. The girl is placed in the middle of the woman to emphasize the huge expectations and what her future is. Setting: This image takes place in modern day because of the girl’s dress and the location of the place, near a beach. The time of day is around noon because of the brightness, where the shadows are cast and the position of the sun. The shadows that are cast and the position of the sun shows the girl’s sadness from her past and that not everything you see is true.
