7 After reading “My Name” by Sandra Cisneros, it is clear that in order to be who we want to be, we have to leave our past and where we come from. Esperanza’s grandmother, who she’s named after, was a “fierce horse woman” who was tied down by her gender and cultural identities (Cisneros 3). This interaction of the protagonist with the minor character of her Grandmother shows that while she wants to identify with aspects of her grandmother’s life, she does not want to be defined by the history of her past. Although Esperanza loves her grandmother, she says, “I have inherited her name, but I don’t want to inherit her place by the window” (Cisneros 4). The antagonist in this story isn’t a person; it’s the reality of what it means to be a Mexican woman in today’s society. This identity and the stereotypes that go with it hold Esperanza back, so in order to move forward in her life with her self-constructed identity, she must separate herself from her past. Example: Statement: In order to be who we want to be, we have to leave our past and where we come from behind.
