Aim: What is diabetes and how is it treated?

1) What causes Diabetes Mellitus? It is caused by an insulin deficiency (pancreas does not produce insulin) or cells do not respond to insulin.

2) What is the result of this? This results in an Increased blood glucose level also known as blood sugar level

3) What is the treatment? Insulin injections and a low carbohydrate diet

4) What is a low carbohydrate diet? Decreased amounts of breads, pastas, sweets, sugar, even certain types of fruits high in sugar

5) How is it tested? Doctors take blood and urine samples and test to see how much glucose is present (sugar). If glucose levels are high, that could be an indication of diabetes

6) What happens to the blood glucose level if you have no insulin? It remains high, & cells can’t use it for energy.

Type 1 Born with condition accounts for 5 to 10 out of 100 people who have diabetes. the body's immune system destroys the cells that release insulin, eventually eliminating insulin production from the body.

Type 2 can develop at any age Usually results from being overweight and poor diet Type 2 diabetes accounts for the vast majority of people who have diabetes-90 to 95 out of 100 people Cells are not able to recognize insulin. This is called insulin resistance. As type 2 diabetes gets worse, the pancreas may make less insulin
