How to use One Search a feature of Destiny (the WHS library server)

How to get on Destiny There are 2 ways to access Destiny From School Located on the desktop From Home via WHS Library Website Link on WHS Homepage

Select Woodbridge High School

Then Login Students use their school login info to access Destiny.

Destiny can search for library materials AND it can also search the One Search databases and online resources that your library has chosen as default resources. *Make sure “Material Type” is set to Any Type.

This is the results list of Library materials, found under the Titles tab. To view the One Search results, click on the One Search tab.

You may need to wait a few moments and/or click on the Get Results button to get all of the results.

Click on the Show link under the database logo to preview the first 10 results for a particular database.

This is a preview of the first 10 results from the biography.com database search. (# of results varies from site to site)

Clicking on the first link takes us to the Biography.com article on Barack Obama. Note that this site has video, timeline, and more.

After you click Add to This List it will change to  In This List. Click on that link to see all of the items you added to your list.

Your list is an easy way to keep a record of sites worth visiting. Scroll to the bottom and click Go to create a Citation List.

Use the citation list to start your bibliography! You can copy the info and paste it into your works cited file, but remember that you must check each site for the last- updated date and author.

You can use the Destiny Power search tab to choose which of the topic-related online resources you would like to search (or not search). By doing this, you will get much better results.

If you're doing a project on the Space Shuttle, you might include World Book, Discovery Channel, and NASA; and you might remove Biography.com and the Merriam- Webster dictionary.

Scroll back up to the top, type in your search term (space shuttle), then click Search or press enter to search for online resources as well as search for materials in your library.

15,300,000 results! I think NASA wins the award for number of results, but sometimes that’s too many. Each online resource will have different strengths and different results.

Remember: you must check each page to get all of the info for each citation! One Search is good, but it isn’t so good that you can just copy, paste, and turn it in.

This Discovery Space page does have an author-- it says "by Irene Klotz" just under the title. The One Search citation list didn’t include an author.

The bottom of this article also has a Posted date: "September 14, 2009" is what you should use for your last- updated date. One Search didn’t catch that information. YOU need to catch it.

Again, it is up to YOU to make sure you check each resource to see whether all of the information was included correctly. This citation... Leroy Chiao on NASA's Future : Discovery Space : Discovery Channel. n.d. Web. 11 August 2011.....would need to be edited so that it would read... Klotz, Irene. Leroy Chiao on NASA's Future : Discovery Space : Discovery Channel. 14 September 2009. Web. 11 August 2011.. [The bold parts show what needed to be changed.]
