Freudian Theory Applied to The Sound and the Fury

Today’s Agenda Turn in poem comparison! No late work accepted on this assignment. Vocabulary List 9: CTS Due Tomorrow Finish Sound and Fury by next Monday

Sigmund Freud 1856-1939 Father of psychoanalysis (dialogue between a patient and a psychotherapist) Pioneer in dream interpretation Formulated the Oedipus and Electra complexes Postulated the existence of the id, ego and superego (3 components of the personality)

Freud’s Components of the Personality Id: seat of our impulses Primitive and instinctual part of the personality Demands immediate satisfaction and when this happens we experience pleasure think newborn baby think child throwing a temper tantrum in the grocery store

How the id works for and against us Pushes us to seek things we need to stay alive, comfortable and motivated. An over-active id in an adult can result in a selfish individual at the very least or worst-case-scenario can lead to addiction and impulsive or psychopathic behaviors.

Freud’s Components of the Personality Ego: negotiates with the id Mediates between the id’s demands and the world’s expectations Decision-making component of the personality While the id operates in chaos and fantasy, the ego operates in reason and reality

How the ego works for us Like the id, the ego seeks pleasure and avoids pain but unlike the id the ego is concerned with devising a realistic strategy to obtain pleasure. Freud made the analogy of the id being a horse while the ego is the rider. The ego is 'like a man on horseback, who has to hold in check the superior strength of the horse'

Freud’s Components of the Personality Superego: another name for our conscience function is to persuade the ego to turn to moralistic goals rather than simply realistic ones and to strive for perfection moral structure is learned from parents, religion, legal structures, etc.

How the superego works for and against us Guides us toward career aspirations, how to treat other people, and how to behave as a member of society. Behavior which falls short of the ideal self may be punished by the superego through guilt. The super-ego can also reward us through the ideal self when we behave ‘properly’ by making us feel proud.

How they work together The ego has no concept of right or wrong; something is good simply if it achieves its end of satisfying without causing harm to itself or to the id. It engages in secondary process thinking, which is rational, realistic, and orientated towards problem solving. Judgment comes into play with the superego.

Id, ego, and superego in The Sound and the Fury Critics have suggested that the three Compson brothers represent the three different personality components. The imbalance in each of their personalities and their inability to function together as a whole family destroys the last of the Compsons.

Your assignment: Due Thursday Decide which part of the personality is dominant and creates an imbalance in each brother. Give your rationale. Provide at least three examples from the novel as support for each claim.
