1 The Problem: Undereducated Students and Faculty Colby’s procedure for coping with sexual misconduct is inefficient. The majority of acts of sexual misconduct are unaddressed and unreported. Students and faculty are undereducated. Many students are unaware of what justifies as sexual misconduct. Perpetrators often do not know what qualifies as sexual misconduct and victims sometimes do not realize that an act of sexual misconduct has occurred. These instances of sexual misconduct have lifelong consequences for the victim. PTSD Depression Isolation Many victims blame themselves. There are not enough counselors to support Colby students. Statistics of Sexual Violence Sexual assault effects 100% of people. It is a global issue. Every one hundred and seven seconds, a sexual assault occurs in the United States. Almost twenty percent of women surveyed have “been raped or experienced an attempted rape at some point.” Twenty-five percent of women have been abused or assaulted by a significant other. 80% of sexual assault victims are under the age of thirty. “68% of sexual assaults are not reported to police.” Only 16% of all rapes were reported to law enforcement” in 2011. “In 2006 alone, 300,000 college women were raped.” “About 3% of American men have experienced an attempted or completed rape in their lifetime.” Acknowledgments Thank you to all whom aided in the development of this project. Especially: Stacey Sheriff Emily Schusterbauer Tanya Kureishi Emily Taylor The Solution: Distributing Information The creation of a mandatory semester long course Colby students must take in their first four semesters. The class would count for two credits. The course would meet once per week for an hour, and be largely discussion based. Class size would be small and limited to fifteen students per session. Curriculum would include (but would not be limited to): What is sexual misconduct? What are the types of sexual misconduct (i.e. physical vs. non- physical)? What undermines a culture of consent? Legal repercussions for perpetrators and emotional/physical consequences for victims. How to prevent sexual assault and report sexual misconduct. Sex, sexuality, racism, sexism, homophobia, stereotypes, etc. Bystander intervention and supporting friends who have been assaulted. What would it mean to live in a culture of sexual consent, sexual safety, and sexual respect? No means no vs. yes means yes movement. Abusive relationships. Sexual misconduct through technology. Each class must try to solve a given issue, such as how to increase reporting of sexual assault at Colby or how to combat victim blaming. In addition to a new class, teachers must go through a more extensive training process in order to understand the reporting process from a faculty standpoint. More counselors must be available to students. Steps 1.Work with Emily Schusterbauer, Dir. of the Gender and Sexual Diversity Program and Assoc. Dir. of the Pugh Center, to create a petition. 2.Reach out to students, faculty, alumni, and parents. 3.Present petition to Provost and Dean of Faculty Lori Kletzer and Assoc. Vice President for Academic Affairs and Assoc. Dean of Faculty P. Greenwood. 4.Get approved. Create a budget. Start extensive hiring process. Assuming 25% of Colby freshmen and sophomores will take the course each given semester, Colby will educate roughly 360 individuals per semester and will need to offer twenty-four classes. Assuming educators can teach five, one-hour classes per week, Colby must hire at least five new teachers. The average amount a given Colby assistant is paid annually is $76,678, multiplied by five teachers is $383,390 per year to pay salaries. 5.Create a curriculum. 6.Find classrooms to host courses as well as office spaces for new faculty.
