Prepare for ‘Listen and make’ activities Before the lesson: -Prepare what to tell the class about the topic or theme -Collect the things you need so you can show children what to do -Practise explaining in English what they have to make and how they have to make it, phrases that will be useful while they are making it -Think of gestures and actions that will help them understand more clearly 2

There are many things that children can make in class: they can colour, draw,make models out of modelling clay, plasticine, paper, or card They can make things for special occasion (e.g. greeting cards) → Celebrate with children personal events (e.g. birthdays), festivals and special days (e.g. Christmas, Easter, Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day) 3

Activity: Listen and colour Before you start, make sure that everybody has the materials they will need: – Colours: paint, crayons, coloured pencils, felt tips. 1.First do some ‘Listen and identify’ activities to: – Revise the colours – Revise vocabulary for the things they will colour. 2.Explain the activity at least twice 3.Ask the children help you organize the classroom/ give out the materials. 4.As the children are working, speak to them individually 5.Comment positively (in English) on each child’s work 6.At the end, display all the children’s work on the walls. 4

Listen and colour Make the activity more challenging: – give out two pictures, one of a girl and one of a boy, and give two instructions at a time, e.g. Colour his hair brown and her hair black, etc. – give children alternatives, e.g. Colour his hair either red or yellow. – divide the class in two and give different instructions to each group. Later use these pairs of different pictures for games like “Spot the difference” 6

8. How to set up 'Listen and make' activities – Remember that a listen and make lesson in English is an English Lesson, not an art lesson Introduce the topic by talking a bit about it. Use English as much as possible to explain to the children what they are going to do or make. – Use gestures and actions to help them understand. Repeat your instructions at least once While they are colouring or making, go round the class and comment (in English) on what they are doing. 8

Listen and draw Teaching tips – After they have finished drawing, let the children compare their pictures and then colour them in. – Go round and talk to them in English as they are colouring in, and comment on their work like this: Ah, Sara, so you have coloured your birds red and green, like parrots. Very pretty... Mmmm. That's a nice green tree, Pietro... but where’s your cat? Oh, I see him, hiding behind the tree. 13
