Objectives 1.) Be aware of the changes in our society related to perceptions and expectations for healthy aging. 2.) Compare how the focus on wellness is changing life for seniors in community living settings at all levels of living 3.) Be able to apply the principles of healthy aging to their lives, whatever their age.

Ageism

Myths on aging Most older adults live in nursing homes and cannot get around by themselves Older adults do little more than sit around, watch TV and sleep Older adults who continue to work are inefficient and miss many work days due to illness” “Older adults are lonely and depressed People over 65 have diseases and disorders that limits their freedom to do what they want” Older adults aren’t interested in people of the opposite sex” Older adults are obsessed with death and dying. They fear death more than any other age group

Statistics on Aging Growth of number and proportion of older adults is unprecedented Population of American’s 65 or older will double in the next 25 years to about 72 million 2 out of 3 older adults have multiple chronic conditions – treatment for this population accounts for 66% of the US health care budget

Good news... Dementia Prevalence is Declining Matthews et al. (2013) reported in the journal Lancet that dementia rates among people 65 and older have plummeted by 25 percent over the past two decades, to 6.2 percent from 8.3 percent, a trend that researchers say is probably occurring across most developed countries. 7 Dementia Prevalence is Declining Possible reasons for the 25% reduction: Controlling cardiovascular risk factors Cholesterol Blood pressure Better education and possibly more cognitive stimulation Greater awareness of the importance of physical exercise © 2015, Dr. Rob Winningham All Rights Reserved
