2 Auditory Perception 1 Streaming 400 vs. 504 Hz 400 vs. 566 Hz 400 vs. 635 Hz 400 vs. 713 Hz A 400-Hz tone (tone A) is alternated with a tone of a higher frequency (tone B: 504, 566, 635, and 713 Hz). The tones are presented in the temporal sequence shown in the figure. For each comparison you are to decide if the perception is one of a single source whose pitch changes in a “galloping” manner or two source, each with its own pitch. 125 ms duration and separation

3 Auditory Perception 2 Role of Onset Asynchrony in Complex Pitch Processing 200-Hz Pitch 300-Hz Pitch 200+300-Hz Pitch (same onsets) 200+300-Hz Pitch (different onsets) Two complex, missing fundamental pitch stimuli are first presented in isolation (200-Hz Pitch and 300-Hz Pitch). Then the two complexes are added together when they start at the same time [200+300-Hz (same onsets)] and when the 200-Hz complex begins 75 msec before the 300-Hz complex [200+300-Hz (different onsets)]. In each condition there are five repetitions. In each case identify the pitch or pitches that you perceive. Both from 3 rd to 12 th harmonics. 500 ms signal

4 Auditory Perception 3 Categorical Perception in Speech BADA BA DA Seven Formant Transitions Seven versions of the BA-DA continuum of 2 nd formant transitions. The spectrogram on the lower left is for the first stimulus, which is a BA; and the middle spectrogram is for the last of the seven stimuli, which is a DA. The other five stimuli were generated with 2 nd formant transitions as indicated in the schematic spectrogram on the right. The seven stimuli are usually perceived Categorically as either BA or DA.
