2 Homeless in Seattle One Night Count 2014 Homeless in King County - 800 Volunteers counted 9,294 men, women and children with no shelter in King County - Another 6,171 in shelters and transitional housing programs (2012) -14% increase - Washington State Ranks 8 th in Rate of Homelessness in 2012 (behind Hawaii, Oregon, Nevada, New York, California, Colorado, Wyoming,) Coming Soon: January 2014 http://www.homelessinfo.org/one_night_count/

4 Course Objectives Analyze the major social, cultural, legal and political factors contributing to homelessness in Seattle Understand the challenges and steps for finding shelter for homeless individuals Identify the major oral and systemic health issues confronting homeless individuals in Seattle. Understand health care access problems for the homeless Have completed 6 hours of hands-on experience in providing oral health education and/or care delivery for homeless individuals. Understand how health professionals from different backgrounds can work together to address the needs of the homeless.

5 The Course – An Ideal Match student-led lunch-time elective TO Supplement Outreach  Experts in the Field Physicians Researchers Social Workers Shelter Staff Public Advocates Dentists Nurses Pharmacists  Community Partners

6 What are the Requirements? Discussion Sessions (1 hour/session)  Students must participate in 5 lunch-time discussion sessions per quarter (15 sessions/year) Outreach Activities  (6 hours/quarter)  Students will need to volunteer at least 6 hours per quarter (18 hours/year)
