16-2 The Wave Nature of Light Light consists of particles that travel in a wave fashion…this is the dual nature of light…wave and particle. When a water (or light wave) travels through a dual slit, it makes two waves that interfere with each other and produces an alternating pattern as a result of the interaction…for light, that makes a pattern on a screen of dark and light bands. The dark regions are areas where wave and crest cancelled and caused no light to appear.

ColorColor Sir Isaac Newton was the first to experiment, document, and name the spectrum of colors from white light. Huygens, Grimaldi, and Newton did work that suggested that color was related to wavelength. Visible light falls within the wavelengths of 400nm to 700 nm. Red Orange Yellow Green Blue Indigo Violet. Nano stands for 10 -7 m.

Color by Addition of Light

Complementary Colors Complementary colors are 2 colors of light that can be combined to create white light.

Color by Subtraction Pigments absorb colors and what color not absorbed is what your eye sees. The primary pigments are the ‘flat sides’ of the triangle…yellow, cyan, and magenta. A pigment that absorbs 2 colors and reflects only one is called a secondary pigment. Red-absorbs green and blue Green-absorbs red and blue Blue-which absorbs red and green

Polarization of Light Light naturally travels in every plane as it travels forward. When light is passed through a polarization filter, or when it is reflected off of a flat surface, it is polarized to travel in one plane of travel.

Polarizaton With Filters

Malus’s Law See page 452 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=utY72MD -Ii4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=utY72MD -Ii4 Malus’s Law-the law stating that the intensity of a beam of plane-polarized light after passing through a rotatable polarizer varies as the square of the cosine of the angle through which the polarizer is rotated from the position that gives maximum intensity.

Speed Wavelength and Freequency of Light When light travels towards you at a very high rate of speed, it shifts toward the blue end of the spectrum. When light travels away from you, at a very hight rate of speed, it shifts to the red end.
