How: Large & Small scale mining Where: All over the world specifically in North & South America, Central Africa,& South East Asia (especially in Amazonian regions) Why: To make a profit for all those whose immediate environment is not involved.

Mining: Extraction of minerals and metals from Earth pipes pots pans cell phones pagers ( Yes, people still use them) laptops low cost steel Gold Silver Diamonds

Main Types of Mining Strip mining ( surface mining) Removes the nutrients top soil that will reduce or completely diminish the productivity for a long time Large Scale- A company, mines at 1-2 sites until desired materials are completely excavated Small Scale- small migrating groups of people. Travel in hope to find value material

Types of Small mining River dredging-While moving down the river, a suction hose dishevels gravel on the river bed passing it through pipes and gold fragments are collected on felt mats. Land dredging- Miners drill a lager hole into the ground, then uses high pressure hoses to create a bearing slurry which is a combination of sand, clay and gold particles. The remaining of the slurry is deposited into adjacent forest, rivers, or an abandoned mine.

Mining Effect Environment Stagnant pools of water creates a breeding ground for malaria and increase other diseases due to land dredging. Displaced gravel and mud interrupts the natural flow of the river, causing the river’s organism to die, thus affecting the food source of fishermen, and making it harder to navigate the river. Strip mining disturbs the vegetation of the area causing water to carry the soil causing erosion Mining is the main cause of deforestation Cluster materials are discharged into rivers, stream, and ocean effecting human, fish, animals etc…

Mining effects on People People can not use contaminated water to cook, bath, or clean etc… Cultural degrading of sacred sites Black lung diseases- an accumulation of inhaled fine-coal dust particles Headaches skin rashes, vomiting due to exposed to toxic waste from river dredging

Ways to stop Mining SMCRA Making companies responsible for their actions Boycotting companies who are not mining environmentally responsible Write letters to the government
